Why is it so unacceptable for teachers to ask what method did the tutors use? I can understand the 'anger' if teachers ask for & plagiarize the tutor's notes, but to learn & understand another 'new' method, why not??

The world is so big, there are sooooo many things to learn in such a short time. Unless the T is doing it too often, but if occasionally the T finds something good & keen to learn more, imo it's a good thing isn't it? Better than those T who are not interested to find out/accept better methods.
Teachers attend NIE. They are trained to teach.
Why should they use tutors' methods ? There is copyright involved when tutors have their own materials. Furthermore, can we be sure the teachers are asking the kids for methods to teach their OWN class and NOT the others ?
I've heard how schools are banging on their top classes to bring glory to the school. If teachers need to find out how tutors teach, imo it means they are incapable of teaching. Shouldn't they approach HOD instead ?

I do not know enough, so dun wish to assume wrongly. But I think T are trained to teach 'standard' methods. For Maths especially, I believe there are more than 1 method to solve any problem. Some are more efficient than others. Some are easier to grasp (depend on kids probably). A good Teacher/Tutor is one who knows which method to apply & teach a child. So learning as many methods is always good.
As for copyright, I think applicable for notes. For methods, unless the tutor has come out with new methods of their own (then should apply patent/write a book etc for copyright), otherwise it's just applying of another different method.

If the T learns it to teach own class, the classmates benefit. (unless there is no intention to share ..... like what I see in some of my DD's classmates, refusal to share info). If to teach others (I suppose u mean teacher give tuition outside), that will be up to the teacher's own conscience.

Then, it is right for the teacher to ask.

If the teacher sees the child's results improving substantially due to the tutor's teaching and intends to learn and benefit other students in the same class or other classes, I am ok with that too.

If it is for the teacher's own interest, it is obviously a big NO.

I have no idea why teacher wants to know, and I do not want to know why…supposing my son has no tutor, I wonder what will happen.

There are many reasons why the teacher could be interested to know. One possibility could be your child was not applying a technique correctly and she is concerned that the tutor is teaching the wrong thing. It could be the child is doing really well and the teacher just want to know the tutor's method to teach the rest. There is nothing wrong with either since like one of the KSP said, it is a lifelong learning process for everyone.

Son and his classmate have same tutor...he is still struggling but has better understanding. From what I understand, the class is a little weak in Math.

For maths, it’s quite easy to see what method is being used. If you pick up an onsponge book, and look through the workings or an Andrew Er book, you can see the methods. But the step-by-step Thinking process that a Good Teacher can impart cannot be seen on paper. It has to be experienced.

Having sat through my kids’ maths enrichment classes, I can see what Good Teaching is. Good Teaching helps kids to develop thinking skills when they look at each Maths problem. It’s not just about using a method. There are many skills to be acquired in working through a maths sum. For eg, a good teacher sensitizes the child to the Maths Language, helps the child to focus on the interpretation of key words. Another skill is how to translate each sentence into a Number sentence. Then there is the logic skill, which part of the problem do I need to work out first, then what’s the next thing I need to work out, how the different parts relate to each other. Then there is the foundational computation skills - addition, subtraction, multiplication, division. Kids who are weak in maths usually have some difficulty in some of these computation skills. Then there is also the exam strategies that Good teachers provide - how to prevent "careless" mistakes, techniques that help the child to manage time, techniques that help child to read a sum carefully.

I’ve been fortunate to have witnessed what good teaching looks like and I reinforce it by modelling similar teaching approach at home - focusing on teaching the child to think, interpret and specific exam techniques that must be used every time during practice sessions.

My kids school teachers have written comments on my kids Maths papers before that their representation of the answers is good. It’s the model method being used but the way my kids have been taught to present their working is very clear so that is demonstration of clear thinking.

Base on my understanding, teachers sometime check with the kids to ensure that they are not confuse by the different methods. Which method is better will very much depend on the kids' abilities. It is good to learn the different methods. However, the kids must be able to know which method to apply by looking at the question. Teachers usually try not to teach too many methods to the weaker kids in order not to confuse them. Methods that are easier to understand are more suitable. My son's teacher discouraged them to use algebra method.

                      Hi!

Sorry I may be posting in the wrong thread. Do you think it is ok to plan for a short trip during the PSLE marking dates ie. 15 - 18 Oct to reward my DD for the 6 years of hardwork?? Or is it better to go after the PSLE release date 22 Nov (tentative).
Kindly direct me to the correct thread. Thanks

Of course it's alright to go on a break. PSLE's over, there's no school. Have fun!
