Dear parents,

We have hired a private Math & Science tutor for my daughter since P3 and she able to pass her two subjects. However her tutor left her without any notice when she was sitting for her P5 SA1 exam, thus she failed her 2 two subjects with a score of 23(Math) & 36 (Science). After SA 1 we quickly get her a male tutor. Again she failed her math (score 23) & Science (47.5) for her SA 2. Now we are in the lost and very worries for her as next year is her PSLE.
Appreciate your advices on
-What shall we do now with this very short of period before the PSLE?
- How to help my daughter to bring her confidential back?
- Should we change the present tutor immediately? If yes, any recommendation?
- Thought of quiting my present job to stay at home to guide and give moral support to my daughter, is advisable?

Thanks in advance
Amy
I've PM you
I did not focus on the chinese idioms at all during my ds1 PSLE.They will not be tested in Paper 2. AT most can only use in Paper 1. So to me it is not so important.

Tho I do hope the kids will learn some proverbs/idioms etc to help score in exam, personally I prefer them to learn more and just simply appreciate them. Some of them are actually very very interesting. I have some collections since years back but mainly they are words only, so quite difficult to attract kids and people who have no interest, unlike the current versions with lotsa illustrations.
Similarly, when I try to teach some Chinese to my kids, I have never really bothered about syllabus....as long as it's age appropriate, no harm learning right? Let's hope I'm not using the wrong method 😉

It's not wrong to teach kids more about Chinese...it's a language and Mother tongue. So they should learn more about it and not bcos of passing exams.
Chinese is a very interesting subject and when I read his Oral reference, I do point out to my boy.
Chinese is made more interesting now with those cartoon-like books to explain how idioms come about.
I bought a set of 4 books for Chinese Idioms in cartoon illustration for my boy. He's interested and keep them for his bedside reading... encouraging right?

He even described the cartoons to me in Chinese, but when I ask him what is that idiom, he couldn't tell me! Faint! 😓

Hi All,

My DS will be sitting for PSLE in 2012 too....
We've started last week on his weaker topics on math...we don't have tuition except for chinese and i'm worried that i may not know all the answers to his questions....too late to get a tutor now... and i'm not sure tuition centres are any good...any advice?
Funkymonkey,
Nice to \"see\" u again 😂
Suggest you try out the Maths topic with your son on your own. For questions you cannot answer, you can post in the Maths thread of this forum. There are forummers like Tianzhu & MathIzzzFun who are fantastic in solving Maths problems with very clearly explained solutions. I've learnt much from them.
Hope this helps.

My ds will be taking his PSLE in 2012 too. He is doing some work at home but have not started revising in depth yet. Going to start in Nov/Dec holidays. Good luck to all taking PSLE in 2012.

Hi cokepower, there's still a year more to PSLE, so your daughter still has time to catch up. During the hols, you can revise with her the P4 and P5 topics to strengthen her foundation. Encourage her to practise assessment book questions and check the answers on her own.

I think your DD has to depend on herself more. I have a feeling that your girl is not learning much in school and depended on her previous tutor to go through the lessons with her. Hence, she failed the subjects when the tutor left. You should find out from her school teachers how she's doing in class. Is she attentive? Does she understand the lessons? Does she participate? Make sure that she isn't being left behind in class.

Nowadays it's not easy to survive on a single income, but you could discuss this with your DH. If his income is sufficient for the family, I think your being there will give your DD a great boost of confidence. 😄

Hi Cokepower,

You are only left with 11 months or so to build up your DD’s foundation in Maths. Not that I want to scare you, 11 months will pass very fast when school term starts, the teachers will want to finish the syllabus asap by Term 2. Thereafter, the students will be given past years’ exam papers to do, one after another. If your DD’s school is not so kiasu, then may not be that bad.

What I want to advise you is, build up your DD’s foundation during this holidays. If you have been following her work for the past years, you will know that maths concepts spiral up each year. From her results, I could sense that her foundation is weak, that’s why she performed badly in P5. P5 work is basically higher concepts. If the child foundation is not built up in P3 and 4, she will not be able to grasp and do her P5 work well.

However, not to be pessimisstic. Go through her P3 and 4 work very quickly with her first. Try to spot on which is her weakness - fraction, decimal, percentage or ratio? These are the main ones that she must understand. It will be good if her model drawings are good.

Once she is able to understand them all, move on to P5 higher concepts math questions. In P6, they will be taught basic algebra, speed, volume and geometry. However, only one or questions will be tested on these topics in the problem sums of Paper 2. For this year, there was no question on volume. Therefore, focus more on the main fours.

You will have to sacrifice your time for the next 11 months or so with her. It will be good if your company allows you to work half day for next year. No point staying at home the whole day since your DD will be spending half the time in school. Do note that there will more supplementary classes next year too so she will have less time to revise on her own next year.

Very importantly, manage the time well next year and remind your DD to focus in class so she will not have to struggle so much.

Do make good use of this holidays. All the best.

I'm getting mine here to finish up P5 assessment books. In a way, it's revision since P6 is compilation of everything. Want him to start on synthesis assessment for P6.
Good luck to all the kids and also parents for next year.

Hi mummies,

A tutor comes just once or twice a week. We can't expect miracles to happen just based in that. A friend of mine went all the way to coach her son in science even though he attends enrichment. Her son did very well for that subject. :salute: she will take out the past year papers, fill up the answers and test her son in the OE section. That's what I have decided to do with my son from now.

Yup, you can't rely on tutor. For Math, the tutor is basically giving assessment work to your kid and clear some doubts. The kid still needs home support. Mummy or daddy has to be involved in checking and drilling the kids. For Science, it's better to go tuition centre than 1 -1. In tuition centre, tuition centre provides more comprehensive notes and the kids get to do experiments at times. However, mummy or daddy will need to guide them on answering techniques.

Same goes for CL. Tutor can't do miracles. I've been advised to speak to my kids in Mandarin, but after 2 sentences it's back to square 1.
Regarding Science, perhaps an enrichment centre would be more interesting because it's not so dry.
