      Hi

Help! I need help with DS2, too.

DS2 is struggling with numbers in his P1 class. He struggles with adding, subtracting, r4ecognising odd numbers, and that they increase by 2. Is there any easy way or good website for me to taking him through numbers, and then adding and subtraction. He is ok with other areas of maths.

I am frantic, and am thinking of using K2 books to bolster his foundation in maths

      Hi optimistforum,

      Happy New Year!!

I like the Montessori way and it works wonders for my gals. Harder to visualize with my explanation but I found a video which should help.

      Addition: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CiQfwzi7aDE

      Odd numbers: http://www.ehow.com/video_4403353_montessori-counting-odd-even-numbers.html

Do check out the other related videos too..

      hope it helps..

      Thank you RRMummy

The videos were very helpful and i could explain to my son, as we watched them. He was absolutely rivetted to them.

      O

        You are most welcome, optimistforum.

I would strongly suggest that you give your son some buttons / coins /tokens (try to get the same size and colour) and allow him to manipulate the objects and practice. That way the retention of the concept is much greater. The moving of the \"partnerless-object\" down (and leaving it there) will give him a very visual impression that the odd number appears in incremental of 2s. Same goes for the even.

        Hope he has fun! :celebrate:

Help! I am not sure how to answer this question in such a way that my P1 gal can understand. Grateful if anyone can enlighten me.

Trees are planted along a road.
In between each tree, there is a lamp post.

How many lamp posts are there between the 1st and 50th tree?
A counted a total of 100 lamp posts along the road. How many trees are planted along the road?

          Thanks!!!

This is akin to a Maths Olympiad question.

To explain it simply to a P1 child - hold up one hand and count your five fingers (this will be the trees), the 4 gaps in between the fingers are the lamp posts. You will notice that the total number of lamp posts (in between the trees) will always be one less than the total number of trees.

Hence in the Q stated :

            (1) How many lamp posts are there between the 1st and 50th tree?

Ans : Since there are 50 trees, there will be 49 lamp posts.

            (2) If there are 100 lamp posts, how many trees are planted along the road?

            Ans : Since there are 100 lamp posts, there should be 100 + 1 = 101 trees.

              Thanks CMF!!!

For Qns1, I drew 50 trees and literally counted the lamp posts. There are 45 of it. Sorry, could you tell me how you get 49? Thanks so much.

For Qns2, I didn’t draw cos its just too many trees.

              Faintz.

              Thanks!!!

                Hi

Since there are 50 trees, there would've been 49 lamp posts (gaps) in between the trees, (ie. 50 - 1 = 49).

Perhaps when you drew the 50 trees, u did not draw them all in the same line, so when counting those trees drawn in different rows, the gaps in between those lines were not included?

                  Ah, ok. thanks so much.

So how do I explain why sometimes you (-1) and sometimes you (+1)?

I feel that I am so dumb. Aiyo.

In Q1, it was asking for how many lamp posts in between the trees, eg. Tree(1) LP Tree(2) LP Tree(3) LP Tree(4) LP Tree(5)

So since there are five Trees, to find out how many lamp posts (LP) there are, you take, 5 - 1 = 4

In Q2, it stated that there were 100 lamp posts (which are in between the Trees), so from eg above, since there are 4 lamp posts, to find out how many trees there are, you would take, 4 + 1 = 5

Hope I have not confused you further. Don't worry, once you understand the thought process of how it works, you would be able to get the hang of it.
