So how do I explain why sometimes you (-1) and sometimes you (+1)
In Q1, it was asking for how many lamp posts in between the trees, eg. Tree(1) LP Tree(2) LP Tree(3) LP Tree(4) LP Tree(5)

So since there are five Trees, to find out how many lamp posts (LP) there are, you take, 5 - 1 = 4

In Q2, it stated that there were 100 lamp posts (which are in between the Trees), so from eg above, since there are 4 lamp posts, to find out how many trees there are, you would take, 4 + 1 = 5

Hope I have not confused you further. Don't worry, once you understand the thought process of how it works, you would be able to get the hang of it.

Hi parents, Mindstretcher at the newly opened 112 Katong Mall is opening a K1 class on Sundays from 5.15-7.15pm. This is a good P1 preparation programme that teaches both English and Maths. It is a very good class for it prepares the child in both English and Maths.

They need minimum of 5 STUDENTS to start.

Today I read the maths worksheet that was marked by the teacher, and 2 of the questions really made me doubtful of the answer given by the teacher.

              Q1: What comes next?
white cylinder, white rectangle, black cylinder, white cylinder, white rectangle, black cylinder, ?
2 choices of answer was given, namely the black cylinder and white rectangle.
The answer given by teacher is white rectangle, which I don't agree. Dictionary explanation of next is \"immediately after\", so answer should be white cylinder but this choice was not given. I think it is a printing error so question should be voided. Subsequent similar questions do not have the same kind of error and answers are quite straight forward.
              What do you guys think?

Q2: Some kids are queuing to buy ice cream in the following order - 1st is Ken, 2nd is Liza, 3rd is Ravi, 4th is Maria, 5th is Hari and last is Tim.
So Liza is just after __?___
My daughter answered Ken, but teacher's answer was Ravi, how can that be? By my understand, Ravi should be after Liza instead, not the other way round. Is it I am too poor in this simple maths or something wrong with the teacher? I will be very worried if the teacher is wrong as she is the one teaching a class of 40+ students.

                hi balicheers 🙂

my dd1 brought this maths homework to do today.
i was going through with her and
                : [What comes next?
white cylinder, white rectangle, black cylinder, white cylinder, white rectangle, black cylinder, ?
2 choices of answer was given, namely the black cylinder and white rectangle.

: This really got me puzzled. i thought it was a printing error cause there is no correct answer in the option :S:S
i was telling my daughter to leave the answer blank and drew one on her own. 😓
                and
liza should be just after ken. this is what i taught my daughter.unless the question is referring not queing up to buy icecream but going home instead 😓
but looking at question b , ravi is 3rd in the row is correct then liza should be before ravi and not after ravi.
what is the teaching thinking about ? :skeptical:

Got the email reply from the publisher already.

Q1. The correct answer is white cylinder, so it is a printing error. They will change it on the next print.
Q2. The answer is Ken, not Ravi.
Conclusion, the teacher is not paying attention to what she is teaching. She should never assume that the questions/answers provided by the publisher must be 100% right.

I saw this in P1 term 1 school paper :

Four pupils A, B, C and D are to group themselves in pairs of two. How many different pairs can be formed?

How do you solve this at P1 level? Trial and error? Or is there another way to solve this?

                        Appreciate your reply. Thanks.
