Do you all think that primary school math very difficult nowadays? Sometimes when my girl ask me some problem sums, I could take 15-20 mins to figure out the answer…and to think that last time my Math very good.

Totally agree. Maths is VERY tough. But if’ve been sitting with yr child esp in P5/6, you’ll not be so lost esp if you’ve been gd in Maths. You can even coach them. That’s how I pick up the model method…from my child.

My girl is going to P1 next year and I heard that P1 math is so different from our time. Me also worry for my girl expecially she is quite careless at times.

Also understand from my colleague that now you can buy exam questions from branded schools easily for practise. Where got such thing during my time.

I also find that primary school maths are more difficult and tricky than our time. The method they used are different, for example primary school they used number bond to teach add and subtract. However we should still be able to teach them after reading their text book. The Challenge is how to make them understand math concept espeically to those lower primary school students.

              Hi s00s_dad,

Its not so scary for P1. P1&P2 maths are still the fundamental with little tricky. Overall still easy. Some P1& P2 will not have test, so no worries. Anyway, boys are more careless than girls.

Teach her some basic timetable X2, X3 first. if she can master well then learn more. 3rd & 4th semester they will touch on basic multiplication and division. So teach her some basic so easy to cope when she is in school.

I agreed with you, understand the fundamental so that in upper primary, they will be able to cope well.

i hope i can catch up by then....took a peek at the P5/P6 threads...they are not easy at all...
we have to thank parents for sharing!
yes...the challenge in lower pri is actually tackling carelessness.
Teach her some basic timetable X2, X3 first. if she can master well then learn more. 3rd & 4th semester they will touch on basic multiplication and division. eg that 4 baskets of 3 fruits is 4x3 and not 3x4; that 4x3 is 4groups of 3 or Four3s etc etc.

The thing is even if we are able to solve the math problem, the next issue will be how am I going to explain to ensure my daughter understand.

Excuse me????? 4 baskets of 3 fruits, to me, should be 3x4!!!!! but I won't say 4x3 is wrong, it is just how you interpret it... Is it me getting old or the world is changing too fast??

                        hi gajidouma,
with reference to my boy's P1 text, it is 4x3.
think we have discussed that in the link i post earlier. 🙂
