Just wondering… Is putting braces during the 3 months holiday after PSLE a good idea? Or, will it hinder normal speech such that the child will feel embarrassed talking in secondary school?

Braces do not hinder speech in any significant way. The child adjusts very quickly. My 2 girls have just completed their orthodontic treatment and I don't think I noticed any issues with speech. I myself wore braces for many years as a child/teen, and still participated in speech contests. -

It's probably a better idea to put braces on during the long holidays and let your son get used to them, rather than putting them on once school has started. Also, it may be less awkward to start a new school with braces on, rather than having them put on in the middle of the year or something, as it's not a 'new' thing then. -

Might be a good idea to do it during the break. Braces needs adjustment too. I recalled when I did it years ago, it hurts so much in the initial stage that my mouth felt sore. I had to depend on liquid food to get by for awhile. -
don’t do anything this year…anything that causes inconvenience or discomfort/pain. there is oral exam in august. braces will cause some discomfort and pain after tightening…as well as appointments to visit orthodontist. son had several teeth to be extracted last year…all postponed till after psle, as orthodontist didn’t want him to be facing additional ‘stress’.

Janet_lee88, I reckon she is talking about doing the braces after PSLE before Sec 1.
ie. during post PSLE 3-mths break -

Yes, the gums will feel sore for 2-5 days each time the braces is adjusted/tightened. Probably every month or so depending on the tightness & frequency of your review.ngl2010:

Speech - while no major issues, I do think some may find their speech not as clear as before eg. Sounds 漏风. Probably need a little effort/adjustment & when braces are off, everything should be fine.
Embarrassment - these days braces are pretty common & they come in more colors. Some kids even find it hip
So I think shouldn't have much issue too, esp boys. Just prep them first. DS has been on a retainer since 2011, and will be starting his braces soon. So far so good. Will be starting DD after PSLE too.

this boy had a tough time since birth…cleft lip and palate operations at 2 and 8 months respectively. i really pity him.
