I'm from hci sec 1. in my time table, 8 periods spent on LA (english) and only 7 spent on chinese.
By LA (Language Arts), you mean English and English Literature right? -

for those who believe they can manage the HCL, then they shd give it a shot. Coz I understand that without HCL, u will not get a low enough for L1R5 to get into those top JCs which is ard 2~3.
it is the same as RI/RJC and VJC...and need HCL to lower the scores for JC 1 entry, not only for HCI -
fromnuaa:
some kids take tuition because they cannot cope with the studies\"RI/RGS students I know all take Chinese tuition\"
i never know RI/RGS students still need take tuition before...
from p1-p6, my daughter never take any tuition..d1s2:
Yes, HCL in RI/RGS is not easy either. My son's primary school chinese teacher said that their chinese standard would drop for those who went on to RI but she's not worried about those going to HCI. The RI/RGS students I know all take Chinese tuition and some going to 2 different tuition centres just as probably the HCI/NYGH kids do.
some kids take tuition in order to score higher, to learn to master the language
i know some kids take tuition for higher chinese, hoping to score above 95 for HCL, and this does not count toward the PSLE t-score, for the satisfaction of mastering the language per se, and even if were to be used for HCI entry, they don't need the extra 3 points -
okay, parents, since 1980, those “Chinese” schools are just as English as any other schools
even for SAP school like NYPS with only CL as MT, for eg at this recent prelim, the mean score for English is 79.96 and CL is only 73.46, both inclusive of GEP, i.e. the whole cohort…they are more English than you imagine they are Chinese…
so, do not be unduly concerned about wrongly perceived over emphasis on Chinese at the expense of English…which is unfounded -

perhaps my engrish isn't too good. the point I was trying to make has nothing to do with emphasis on chinese or whatsoever. There is nothing defensive about it. it arose from what you said - seemingly pointing the blame to the wrongly assumed emphasis on chinese at the expense of english, which caused your friend's son to eventually have to transfer out of the school - my take is that it is more than meet the eyes...
quote :
\"had a friend who son was in the pre-HCI, chinese high, some yrs ago. was a bright student from NYPS who did very well...no problem with HCL. But somehow during either sec2 or 3, he started failing HCL and that affected his other subjects. since the school does not have normal chinese, his only way ahead was to switch school...not much choice. also, with results sliding down, not easy to convince other 'branded' school to take him in. \" unquote
what I wanted to bring up is that the boy was in CHS and he was caught in a situation where he was not able to 'downgrade' to normal chinese coz there's no such option in the school.
So for those who have doubts in the child's chinese ability/capability, it may be better to explore other options. -

For those who qualified for the IP schools, they wouldn’t be too weak in their Chinese. otherwise their T scores will be pull down significantly and will not meet the COP of IP schools.
Based on this assumption, they should survive ok in HCI/NYGH. My DS is weak in Chinese, but surprisingly he has been doing well with his HCL so far by scoring A1 and A2 for the past three terms. He is in HCI sec1.
He speaks English with his classmates just like any other “English Schools”. -
there will always be exception cases, especially if there's hardly any exposure at home. not sure why but children can simply become disinterested suddenly.
a friend son did reasonably well throughout pr school and got into a SAP school. This yr sec 3 and he is failing as many as 5 subjects during midyr, incl chinese and english. Already kena warned that if cannot pass this SA2 (need a pass for Eng too!!), then gotta find new school coz SAP school no 'normal' stream. -
Nebbermind:
Wish your friend finds out his/her son's reason for declining results and help him improve in time. If he continues failing 5 subjects including English, even going to another school with \"normal\" chinese, he may not do well in O Level overall?there will always be exception cases, especially if there's hardly any exposure at home. not sure why but children can simply become disinterested suddenly.

My boy falls into this category- weak in Chinese, strong in other subjects. He spent the first 3 years in a non-SAP pri sch, P4 to P6 in a SAP pri sch, now taking HCL in NJC. Since P5, his grades in Normal Chinese and Higher Chinese were below the cohort's avg. His PSLE grades are A in Chinese, Merit in HCL, A* in EL/MA/Sc. Now in NJC, his HCL score is still below cohort's avg. Overall GPA is still considered good becos of his strength in other subjects.
