All About GEP

Thanks for the info. Wow! P5 GEP is indeed tough... My kid is already complaining about the amount of homework... and feeling the stress...KSmom8:
Still clueless about IDP for science... What are they supposed to do? Do they have to conduct research and do experiment? The vague example cited by DS was related to crying and cutting of an onion. :? How is this different from IRS?
If same like last year, for IDP, students are supposed to do a home-based science experiment and present their experiment to the class. Some kids took photographs and videos which they incorporate into their presentation. They also have to do a 2 page reflection.
There is a rubric which should be given to students before they embark on the project. Students are marked based on these categories - idea, background research, experiment design (or something like that), presentation and reflecton. -
DD just submitted the mystery story write up… next submission is ERP and SS but she still has not heard anything abt the IDP project…
Mar holiday is coming soon but dd will be busy with her cca… cannot rest and relax… -

Should I be very paisi and add some more? Besides the various olympiad competitions, for P5, there are 3 other programmes (might be more, at least these are the 3 that I know of) which are on selection basis:
1. Math Master Class Programme (http://moe.gov.sg/education/programmes/gifted-education-programme/enrichment-activities/primary/primary-mathematics-masterclass/)
2. Creative Arts Programme (http://moe.gov.sg/education/programmes/gifted-education-programme/special-programmes/humanities-programmes/creative-arts-programme/) where kids have to submit a portfolio of their writing for consideration
3. Leadership Camp
- can't find the link to this one
Yeap, P5 year was a very busy and challenging year, but I think it is also a very fulfilling year with lots of learning opportunities (not just academic but also life skills like setting priorities, working with others etc). P6 pales in comparison ...
One tip, having an organiser/planner to jot down the many competition dates, test dates, project deadlines etc helps. I remembered my DD asking for one last year when she felt overwhelmed and I helped her to transfer the information to her planner and told her to update as and when she receives a circular with important dates that she needs to take note of. -
Hi Zann,
I told think there is any format… min 500 words for ERP.
Hi Trex8
Thanks for providing us with the info…
My DD will be going for the Chinese Language Camp in Mar and she has been selected to go for the Leadership Camp too… but not too sure of the outcome.

what do you mean by \"not too sure of the outcome\"\"? Do you mean that there are more students who are interested in the leadership camp than places available for your centre and that there will have to be an internal selection?
What I know was that a specific number of places were allocated for the Leadership Camp for each GEP Centre (depending on size of cohort). Some kids from mainstream were selected too.
Different centres seem to have different ways of selecting the kids. For DD's centre, they had their P5 camp early in the year and selection is based on observation and performance during the P5 camp. I know of one centre which asks for volunteers and balloted as there were more volunteers than places. -
TREX8:
Hi. May I find out more about this leadership camp? What kind of activities do they do at the camp? Is it a stay in camp? Who conducts the camp? Any advantage of going for the camp or disadvantages of not being selected for the camp?

Leadership Camp is an annual camp organised by GEP Branch but outsourced to a vendor. It is a 3D2N residential camp held in Serembun (not too sure about the venue but it is the MOE campsite located somewhere in Lim Chu Kang, I think). It was held in the last week of June hols for last year. There would be a briefing session by GEP branch prior to the camp.Hi. May I find out more about this leadership camp? Not too sure about the exact activities but I knew that there were water activities, a long hike, pitching and sleeping in tents for one night etc. Each camper was given a booklet for them to record their reflections, learning points etc and each camper came back with a certificate.
Not too sure about the advantage of attending the camp. For us, we were glad that DD's been selected as we knew she would enjoy these activities (although DD is very quiet, she likes outdoor and challenging activities) and there would be many learning points (life skills/social skills like working with others, being tolerant of differences and agreeing to disagree etc). In fact, she made a firm friend with one of ther group mates from another school and they are still corresponding via emails.
Not sure how much this certificate will help towards DD's DSA but we are going to include it in her portfolio as all her other \"accolades\" tend to be academic in nature. -
TREX8:
Thanks Trex8 for clarifying. Good luck to your DD for her DSA. I am sure she will do well.
