Being potatoes served my DSs well in the education system definitely, and provided them with the means to popular courses in the unis. But I often felt that the incredible depth and beauty of the Chinese language was inaccessible to them both because they could not understand it with their CL level and because they could not feel for it. It is as if they percieve the world only half as much as I did.

Perhaps I am old fashion, but with DD, I felt less pressure to make sure she had a \"good\" and \"profitable\" career. I felt happiness for a woman came from a different source, such as having and nurturing a happy family and I was less concern to make her \"clever\". I felt joy when she learned and understood Chinese sayings, idioms and in the way she pronounced the Chinese words so accurately..........

Hahaha......Hard to explain, but after DS1,2 and 3, we wanted a more balanced life for myself and DD. My DD is the laid back sort. She came back at P3 with the GEP Test form and said, \"This is the GEP Test form, and I am not going.\" We took it really easy all through primary school, enjoyed each other's company, cooking, listening to audio stories........skipped all dsa, and did without any tuition except for HCL. After raising 3 potato sons, I consciously wanted and mounded her to be more chi-na, and DD took to CL really well.

That's how DD ended up in DHS, and so far, I am really pleased and impressed by what I see of the school.

That's interesting. I thought the easy way out would be to go MGS and cruise all the way to O levels. Great that your dd likes HCL.

Guess most boys schools will share this principle that it’s best to keep the boys busy, keep them both physically and mentally occupied with CCAs and other activities.

So that they will be too tired to get into any mischief. Like they say it’s better for the boys to spend time on the sports fields rather than in an air conditioned room playing computer games.

What about girls school ?

And co ed school ? They can’t have different treatments to boys and girls right ?

One CCA already so busy! My boy has CCA 3x/week until 6.30pm officially for his 1 CCA(not 2 CCAs!).

Can't really comment about co-ed. My elder boy in co-ed school had Trial ccas for whole year, but he himself joined one CCA too at the start of the year. So he's not representative of his cohort. haha.

That was the advice given by a year 3 mother, a member of the PSG, when we attended the Orientation concert on Sat.

thanks for sharing... I am bit surprised as I remember you are Rafflesian too, and all the time I had a impression that the Raffles families are very 'ang mao', now I have a different view.

I will very much like to know too. Not just for Maths, but for the other subjects.

So far, schools seem to be saying that tuition and assessment books are not advisable as IP is different from O levels. Dd's CL tuition has said that every school uses different things and advises only tuition for compo. Although I do know of students from top schools going for tuition (wonder how their tutors know what to teach). But I also came across a JC Maths teacher who declined to tutor a Y5 IP student because he said IP was different.

I mean, how and where do we get help if our children have difficulty with the IP course, apart from transferring them back to the O levels? What is the source of their difficulty?

Besides sports, I was active in a most unusual CCA-Chinese Society. Even in those days, those involved were a really rare breed of RGS girls who, till today, speak in Mandarin when we meet. We had great fun putting up plays, and even short Chinese operas. I know of a girl who went on to become both a EL and CL teacher. One girl is now a director of Chinese films, while another is involved in translation work. But, you are correct, the Raffles families are really 'angmoh'. I remember how bad the RI boys in JC were in Mandarin that I was asked by my teacher to read the Chinese \"ke wen\" almost everyday because there was no one else to call!
