Suicide cases of the young ones are seldom reported usually for fear of other youngsters following. The news on the first post seemed to be tipped off by the public then the reporter got a chance to report else it may go 'undercover' again (and that's why you can't see ST reporting it yet unless they want to 'borrow' the news). Somehow, if a case is reported, there is a higher chance of another case, a third case, etc, following suit. Meaning what we know maybe just the tip of an iceberg.

The statistics are available somewhere that I can't remember where to obtain.
As far as I know, school staff are not allowed to speak with media at all unless they are authorised persons and what they say has gone through countless checks and revisions. If any staff blurts it out, regardless of reason, you can be sure that the staff's future will suddenly look very bleak. I'm serious.

However, students, friends, relatives, neighbours, etc are not bound by such \"rules\" so they may speak freely to the press. Of course, their sources may or may not be accurate so ultimately, the media usually gets bits and pieces which they have to put together on their own somehow to create a substantial story. That's when \"poetic licence\" or something or other they call it comes into play. Eventually, what you get may not be the true/whole story.

Sorry if I sound harsh but I don't really have a good impression of media in Singapore, especially those papers that are very \"tabloid\". 😛

I came across a parent who scolded her child because he scored 99 marks which is 1 mark short of 100! Such are the unnecessary pressure which I think should not be encouraged.

I'm thinking the mother may be frustrated that the mistake was one of
carelessness... imagine a mistake for forgetting to put the first letter in
the sentence as a capital letter... and worse still forgot to put full stop at
the end. Half mark each = 1 mark. It's like a near miss to perfection.
The mother must be :stupid: in frustration over that 1 mark... 😉

            😞

hiaz buds, my HB is like that leh.... 不可以释怀。。。。 keep on thinking about the \"careless mistake\"....

            feel like :nunchuk: him!

              Picolo:
This afternoon, I happened to speak to an ex-neighbour whose son attends the same school as the boy in the father & son suicide case. What I know from her is, the son is a special needs child and was attending Pri 1 in the mainstream school. The father was retrenched not long ago. He found a new job but must have suffered a bad paycut. The parents had been quarrelling over some matters. It seems that the incident was due to family problems rather than problem with/in the school.

My ex-neighbour also shared that some of the info/details in the wanbao papers are not really accurate. This is not the first time I heard about half-truth reporting on wanbao. Basically, the reporters get some 'skeleton' of a piece of news and then just make up some false details.
Hi Picolo, thanks for sharing. I do agree with you sometime Wan Bao reports are abit 夸张 in some way... but I think sometimes it's quite useful to use it as a topic to \"remind\" some parent...

I'm using this \"7岁童在校受罚回家被父抛下楼 父亲接着也坠楼\" to :scared: my very demanding husband. 😉

                My pleasure. 😄

I feel that careless mistakes worth 4 marks or less are considered acceptable. However, if the child makes careless mistakes worth more than 8 marks, then we have to find ways to minmise the problem. Why nitpick? Sometimes adults make a lot more mistakes. It's only that the parents themselves don't have to sit for exams or tests.

                    Solving the Parenting Paradox

We offer four guidelines to solving the parenting paradox. These guidelines, begun when our children are young, will help us avoid falling into this paradox. We are not suggesting if these guidelines are first applied at a later age that they cannot be effective. However, if we begin to refine effective patterns of helping our children when they are young, they are more likely to be responsive and listen to us as they grow.

                    Guideline One:
                    Let Empathy Be Your Guide.

                    Guideline Two:
Bite Your Tongue, Watch and Listen.

                    Guideline Three:
                    Understand Before You Respond.

                    Guideline Four:
                    Compliment and Be Patient.
Thanks Insider for the article :celebrate:

Happen to watch the mediacorp drama 书包太重 earlier in the evening... Thought was quite interesting.

Mummy went to the tuition ctr to ask her sis who is a tuition teacher for help. Her daughter's teacher returned the daughter's chinese composition unmarked becos the teacher did not know how to mark.

The kids were supposed to write a composition on \"mother's love\". The girl wrote about the love of a mother cockroach for her baby cockroach instead... The compo was well written except that the teacher had not expected the girl to write abt a mummy cockroach's love for her little cockroach.

To cut to the chase... If the girl does not rewrite using the analogy of a \"human\" mummy, she will not obtain a score for her assignment. What would you do as parents caught in the same situation... Would you have your kids rewrite and conform to the system and possibly impede their creativity just so that they can be scored academically or appeal to the teacher that there is nothing wrong with the composition, in fact, it was both creative and well written. 😐
