GEP 2012 - Screening & Selection
-
Good morning! Today should have more good news from those awaiting for results.
Good luck to all! -
Lock:
It's like caught btn the devil n the deep blue sea.Plus, do consider the emotional n self esteem issues if your kid has to go back to mainstream. It's impossible to shut all gossipmongers' n rumourmongers's mouth. This can be more damaging than hvg the kids struggle in GEP.
That's why I am thinking v hard before making a decision and I've asked my DS to think v hard too. I lay out all the obstacles he will face, the fun he will have and the things he will miss from his old Sch in front of him and ask him to seriously think if he wants to go GEP. For me, once in and that's it. There will be no option to opt out.
It's good to let him know the pros and cons and let him make a decision and stick to it. -

Thank you all wise parents for your inputs…
After reading the various threads over the weekend, and getting some add inputs from parents with GEP kids, I am not anywhere closer to making the GEP decision…I am also waiting to speak to my gal’s form teacher…
Here are my convoluted thoughts:
- my gal is already in NYPS- and P4 kids are put into 4 types of classes- GEP; intermingling (where they are thought some GEP syllabus but not in GEP officially); high achiever; normal/ regular
- assuming my gal opts out of GEP- she can go to intermingling class where there is exposure on GEP curriculum (although not tested I guess)
- at the end of the day- education is such a long journey- she MUST do well in PSLE to move to the next stage- if GEP does not help in getting a place in Sec 1, then why bother?
- when I hear that GEP kids only start revising PSLE in May of P6- that is such a short time to prepare for PSLE. I know normal NYPS kids use the ENTIRE P6 year to prepare for PSLE. Jun holidays is only 1 wk break and 3 wks in school
Additional delimma:
- my gal is SUPER SUPER KEEN to go to GEP. She is very keen to learn more, do more projects and get increased exposure (which I told her in intermingling class also can do some of that)
(My gal came in top 5 for her class consistently for P1 and P2, but to me that is just academic smartness, may not be good enough for GEP)
(As for hothousing, she only goes for tuition for higher chinese, I did not prepare her for the 2 sets of GEP test- apart from doing the GEP assessment book bought from popular- one of the parents shared about this book on this forum)
- my hubby believes we should let her try GEP- cos she got in on her own merit- we did not push her
- my mother- who is her daily coach (she coaches my gal in Eng/ Math/ Sci) is very keen for my gal to try GEP- and believes in her ability
I think I am the "protective" type of mum- do not want my child to "suffer" when there are alternative means (intermingling class) for her to expose to GEP curriculum, and yet, have enough time to prepare for PSLE…
I guess for parents with kids who have to change school to get into GEP- just the thought of their child being in a "better" school with more competitive classmates, and more challenging curriculum may be VERY attractive. But my gal is already in NYPS- is there a need to further stretch her in GEP???
Any alternative views from wise parents here??? -
Can't resist giving my two cents worth here.

I don't agree that for those in schools other than GEP schools, just the thought that we can change schools is VERY attractive.
These parents and these kids in other schools face an equal dilemma as they are reluctant to change schools actually.
For me, we will go for the briefing and then I'll let my ds decide. It is his educational journey, I can guide him in making wise decisions but whatever decision he makes, he knows he will be responsible for it and for his own happiness. -
Fairyprincess, i will recommend you list down all the pros and cons, and let the girl make the decision herself.

I agree with you totally and I am going to do the same. When my DS signs on the consent form, it's going to be 100% willing on his part. Can't resist giving my two cents worth here.

GEP is not about being top of PSLE. It is about sharpening analytical skills and broaden perspectives, which is important in life long learning.
