Why is this problem so prevalent? It is the teaching method. Heuristic, concept, open-book exam and many other grand noble methods have eroded the traditional practice of memorizing. We still need to memorize even though we understand the concept. Understanding can only make memorizing easier, it cannot eliminate the need to memorize if we need to tackle exam successfully - there will be not enough time. However, understanding of concept will enable the kid to solve tricky question. That separates those who understand and those who memorized.

Therefore, a good tutor is one who can help the kid to REMEMBER the important points FOR EXAM. Yes, it is exam-orientated but on the positive note, it also set a good foundation for the kid to be able to memorize many more things needed for higher learning e.g. organic chemistry.
i reluctantly agree. well if the whole point of getting tutors is for the kid to do well or at least pass the exams, yes, exam-oriented tuition is the way. a bit task-oriented but adult corporate work life is mostly that anyway. kinda sad that kids are exposed to that mentality so young, but it is the choice parents have to make themselves.

Had another tutor only know how to go through science text book and marking assessment book (with answer sheet) and not teaching my kid on how to answer science open-ended questions.

Normally, I ask the secondary students to mark themselves (to let them learn to be independent), and then those questions that was answered wrongly or unable to answer, we can focus on that.

I feel it is more productive this way.

Tutors are engaged to teach the kids, to train them.. not to mark questions. Why spend money to pay tutors to mark questions if the answer sheet is available. Worse if the tutors NEED the answer sheet to mark all the questions.. something is very wrong....

Unless the students doesn't know better for his/her own good and cannot be trusted.. then the tutors need to mark the papers, or maybe even the parents can mark it, then ask the tutor to explain to the kids those that he got it wrong.

I ask my dd to mark her self using answer key since p4, except fr OE. We only go through the wrong one , even before teaching her hw to answer the wrong one correctly i wd ask her to go through a detailed solution answer key to figure out her self hw to solve it, only when she does not understand i will help her by asking questions that would prompt her to think n lead her to understand the concept instead of spoon feeding her by telling her what to do. It is better to train the kids to be able to learn independently to prepare her better for secondary (i think 😓 )

I think my kid’s tutor was trying to turn the tuition into a coaching

            session instead.
I hv suggested to hv tuition on alternate week for subject A and subject B
But was rejected and yet she says that my kid can ask questionss beyond Sub A and B.

please share with us what the school teachers do / did not do when they \"barely teach\" ? what does the teacher do when not doing teaching ? busy controlling the class ? discipline issue ? chit chatting with the boys and girls ? absent from school ?

Am very curious…when choosing the home tutors for Maths. Do you only look at those with Maths Qualification eg. Uni/Undergrads from which faculty? Must major in Maths?

Experience is the most important. Math tutor must be able to teach more than 1 method i.e. model or algebra or.... Must be flexible to adopt the appropriate method depending on the kids' inclination. Math tutor must be able to group questions and solving methods into types. Then the kid can look at each question in a different light i.e. recognising the type, rather than trying to solve heuristically.

I think those are the basic requirements.
