Dis practice seems to be common place in many countries.

If u r going on a self-drive holiday, u just need to obtain
an International Driving License fr AA.
D problem lies with reckless drivers, not dis reciprocating policy
of making it more convenient for qualified drivers to drive in various countries.

No, u need to hv a valid SG driving license
in order to apply for an International driving license.
          - dat's d control measure.

saw a posting in Today regarding foreign drivers' licences:

            1. they need not convert their foreign class 3 licence into a singaporean one if they stay <1 year.
            2. for those staying> 1 year, they just need to pass a MCQ basic theory test at one of the 3 driving centres to convert their licences
            3. receive their class 3 licence on the day they pass

no practical driving test at all? :? :yikes:
Think practical driving tests are useless if the drivers decide to drive like a racing car across the road.

but it was mentioned that if the foreigner stays <1 yr, he/she is allowed to drive using their own foreign driving licence.

It really depends on how responsible the driver are. My ex boss stayed in the states for quite a while and is used to the left side driving. When he return to Singapore ( his driving license was from Singapore, he converted to international driving license in the states), he knew he will need time to get used to right side driving. So he drives round a deserted area near his house for a few round - and when he first brake, he nearly ram his car against the garbage bin. He practiced till he was confident before he went on the road. He was near 60 then. A responsible guy who knows a simple mistake may cost lives.

these people can memorise the traffic symbols and whatever theory questions pose but are they familiar with our road conditions/requirements? the driving tests conducted in their respective countries may also vary.
