Just curious hor, you sent your kid to enrichment prog since 2 yrs ago, so I think it when your child was 2?

I'm curious if you starting the prog at 2 why do you seem displeased that the academics demand from the childcare is advanced? Or is it becos the enrichment progs are not academic in nature?

My ds coming to 5 this yr, he refuses to be 5 till he's officially 5, had also started addition and subtraction with 2 digits up to 50 without borrowing for subtraction but for addition he was learning about addition with changing. These were done since term 1 of K1.

Erm... my child in K1 this year only learning number bonds within 10...

I remember seeing two-digit addition like in 2H of K2 for my older DD.

He did the single digit addition in K1 too, then progress from there.

sometimes, it does get a little confusing with all these new age sounding names - when actually it means the same thing. think our time, it was called excursion?

actually, even the word \"tapestry\" is such a big word for an adult, much less to a 7yo kid. think if such a word was presented to my mom years back, she'll probably say, \"simi pastry?\" :rotflmao:

But I must say that the template is good to have. It's serves as a visual organiser to guide students what to do and how to go about it - whether for written or oral work.

The recommended curriculum for math is for children to grasp the number concepts within 20 by end K2. Once a child has a strong grasp of the number concepts within 20, they will not have any problems going beyond that even to 100s and 1000s. When we say number concepts we are referring to number bonds, more then, less then, what comes before, what comes after, ordinal numbers, tens and ones, counting in 2s, 5s and 10s.

That is what my children's preschool advocates too.

Actually, if the kid knows what to do, even if wrote broken sentences and un-organised words, and graded badly… it is not so bad… after all children’s abilities vary, and they grade based on performance.


What I’m not happy with is, the P1 kid bought the paper to me, and ask "how to do? what to do?". Seems to me that they did not go thru proper explanation or training in class.

Just to share, my elder kid in P2, bought back this assignment, need to draw, then write sentences, words etc… My kid was able to, w/o assistance, start doing the homework. Drawing ugly pictures, broken English etc…, but able to start on it. Then, when certain part not sure, ask me for help. This shows that the T had clearly trained them well in the assignment before. And even if the grades not good, I’m ok, because the kid was doing work that they were taught in school. they knew what they are supposed to do.

I am only upset if the kid had totally no idea on how to even start doing the assignment and what is expected of them. They are only P1, the T should have explain more clearly to make sure each and every kid understands and knows exactly what to do. How they perform, is then, up to the individuals standards.

Just bring back an assignment and expect the parent to teach? is that the correct approach? At least, provide a sample so that if it is parent’s homework, they know how to get started…

I understand how you feel. But what if the T did explained but the child did not listened? But what if the T did explained but the child still don't understand and dared not ask the teacher? What if the whole classs knows how to do it and only a few just don't get it and the T does not even go an extra mile for these few students who don't get it? To me.....too much ifs and hence I will not put the T in the equation totally and that is why I always monitor my children' work. These days can't really rely totally on the school, it is even worse if you get a lousy teacher. That is also the reason why I stay clear on the topics of teachers' profession. Seen it, experienced it......yes agreed there are good teachers among the teachers. But there are lousy teachers among the teachers as well. Perhaps I am unlucky or I have high expectation. That is why I take it as a gamble to have a good teacher. It's like getting a maid......you never know what you are experiencing until.......

My dd1 had to practise S&T with different topics before the graded one and each time although we have a note from the teacher, she was able to tell me more or less what she was required to do. I will ask guiding qns to get her started and sometimes many guiding qns.

Does your P1 has work like draw pic and write about them too? Mine do and it helps her for S&T. Her S&T, she had to draw something related to the topic and write about it so it was not totally a new experience for her.

Until you clear this up with your child’s teacher, it is presumptuous to insinuate that teacher did not teach. Suggest you make effort to catch up with teacher over the phone (ask him/her to call u) or meet personally lagi best if you are fetching your child home yourself. Let us know how it goes after u clarify n we can all pitch in to help you move on from there if you or your child need assistance with such work in future or other types of assignments tt are brought home. Need to conclude one chapter before gg on to the next. There’s another few mths to go till end of school year. You can’t always be at work thinking your child is not being taught stuff by this one teacher and unknowingly allow such thoughts to cloud your judgment on this one person and slowly thinking mebbe the rest of them aren’t teaching too. Pick up the phone today to give a tinkle or write a note requesting for a quick catch up with the teacher. Let’s start somewhere to get this cleared up.

Don't jump into conclusion yet. My child always give me the blank look when I ask him what has he learnt in school today. When I ask him what has the teacher said today, he would say teacher said nothing.

I have come to realise, sometimes it's not teacher didn't say/teach anything. It's not child didnt learn anything either. It's probably the child could not respond appropriately to the adult's questions.
