Is there some kind of iphone/ipad application that does translation? -
Busymom:
A hidden question is \"Is MOE/School expecting parents to engage tutors or enrichment other than the ones provided by PCF prior to P1?\"
A simple Yes or No answer should suffice for purpose of your intended conclusion.
That is why the poll is conducted with the given choices

Yup for Chinese S&T, my dd1 had a template.
For Chinese, Term 1 was HYPY but from Term 2 was moving towards Chinese characters and now the focus is on Chinese characters with HYPY as helping guide. But at home, I will cover the HYPY and make dd1 to focus on the characters. -

I'm switching to potato diet..
That's because your kids (and mine) are Potato Kids. There are rice kids that face the opposite situation.Busymom:
Funz, I am with you on this one that such an assignment is too tough for P1 kids for the Chinese subject. Chinese is different from English. To write in Chinese, you really need to know how to write that word. Not the same for English. While P1 kids are taught to use Chinese dictionary, I doubt they could really effectively check the correct word from a dictionary when there are so many similar-sound words and almost similar-looking words in Chinese.
Plus, the focus of Chinese lessons in 1H of P1 is indeed on HYPY. I remember my DD's tingxie back then was all in HYPY only... although I find it harder for her to get perfect score actually... LOL.
But.. in the long run, would the diversity and rich culture of SG be eroded as everyone speaks English at work, school, home, and everywhere? -
Mawar:
I like this..
This year, parents are dicouraged from 'helping'. The teachers said if the kids were unable to complete an assignment, let it be. This would help teachers identify problem areas. But they did say that the students would not be spared from a 'gentle scolding' if they felt that the students could do better!
For compo writing, the P1s are encouraged to write as much as they could on a given template with lotsa of helping words. They could also cut and paste some sentences to form the body.
Same for Show & Tell, a template is given. The weaker students could just fill in words. Others could add to the template or write their own. Best of all, all this is done in class and not at home. The process takes a few lessons so the students own the 'assignment'. Then they practise a few times before the actual assigned day.
So I can, the P1s can learn and complete their assignments.
it is proper training for the kids in school.. -

I know what your intention is...

But others are drawing the wrong conclusion because of that. -
Is MOE concern abt pre-primary 1 education? Dies anyone know if MOE works closely with MCYS on what is the appropriate curriculum in pre-school so that the kids will not be totally lost in P1?
-
I still stand by my earlier comment, which is:
Yes, the assignment can be done without external help
and many posts in this thread do indicate this. -
limlim,

I know there is communication between the two. For example, preschools are strongly encouraged not to teach HYPY, but to leave that to primary school.
I know my children's preschool teaches HYPY only in 2H of K2 because of that. To me, that half a year of preparation is good enough.
