If a student is not guided in class or simply don't understand the wordy instructions and the parents too busy/ not highly educated enough to comprehend the bombastic words, then he/she will underperform in front of his/her privileged classmates who can put in a \"professionally-guided\" piece of work. Bottomline is whether they are guided in school.

      I agree.

Say, the posted sample is a \"Show and Tell\".

If the kid without any external help produces a blank page.. I wonder how he/she will be graded for \"Show and Tell\"..

Yeah.. My kids stare at the paper and wrote nothing.. if I did nothing..

How about those families who are unable to do anything.. (Not English educated etc..)?

      Ah...... tuition.. anyone?

There are BASC. From the various sharing of mummies who send their kids to BASC, I learned that the teachers will revise work with the kids and even ask them to buy assessment books that the teachers will go through with them too. Though for s&t, I'm not sure if BASC helps in this.
sorry.. what is BASC?

If they're not graded, then I think it's not a big issue to me. Whether they're able to do a decent show-n-tell or not, the teacher will be there to guide them and help the weaker ones (with ref to SAHM_TAN's post). There'll be some that are better, others not so. Anyway, it's just an exposure for the kids to learn \"presentation\" in front of an audience.

Hope I got the right picture about this assignment. :xedfingers:
Then, maybe, the article could be a simple write-up where the kid just need to demonstrate the presentation skills instead of having to produce the article themselves?

like I said, if the kid produced a blank page, how to even conduct the S&T?

            😂

So it all boils down to what you thought the school expected out of the kid? Before you became shocked or puzzled, was your kid stressed or lost over this assignment?

            Totally \"lost\".

Stared at the paper.. blank look.

I asked, \"Didn't the teacher explain to you how to do, how to start, what to write?\"

            \"Blank look\".

Ahhhh, so this is your kid's assignment?

May I ask is your kid from atas primary school? The language is very atas level. The S&T notes from my dd1's teacher was in very plain English.
Not atas.. I guess.. nowhere near nyps or the like.. it's near to my house within 1km. I choose logistic over atas-ness.. I guess it was never mentioned in the school debates in KSP.. iirc.. not like nyps, hpp etc..

but, for most years, P2C need to ballot.

Question no 1 "A Learning Tapestry Experience" stumps me……guess I may have to repeat P1 if I were 7 years old now.

Chance upon this thread only today. And because I read this today (not any earlier), I believe my child would be able to do it when he is in primary one. If I read thus earlier, I would Have been so shocked that the standard of primary one has been so high these days...

Yesterday I happened to do a review with one of my child's teachers. She showed me a recent piece of written work by my child. I almost flipped off the chair. My child, together with the rest of the class, was made to write their thoughts after a recent excursion to the eggs farm. After the write up, the selected children are supposed to do a show (drawing) and tell ( based on the written assignment).

Needless to say, the purpose of the review was to tell me - my child \"cannot make it\". But guess what? My child is only four!!! It was not a bashing session, just to remind me to get my child to practice writing more often. But I also flipped because.... Eh come on, my child is only four!

So if this type of training continues, I am quite sure my child can do this assignment when he is in pri 1.
Imami - meaning there were actually kids at four who could make it? Wow! 😓 wouldn't that mean standards have moved yet again? Just wondering. I am not against high standards. We benefit from them, but if we were to just compare what kids in P1 and 2 do now vs nursery and kindy, are we seeing an acceleration toward what P1 and 2 kids are doing? Is your 4 year old already learning the times table? :yikes:

                Thanks for sharing!

You're being notti here, SAHM_TAN.

Ok limlim, I've voted after you're clarification.

My son would have no prob doing that assessment in T3 bcos he was guided well by his teacher in T2 and I've realistic expectation for a P1 work.

Now that I've done my part of the sharing. Can I check something with you? Ok it's a tad personal and I'll understand if you won't want to answer.

Is it a big issue to you for a parent to be asked to coach a child? In order words, in your opinion, is education - in the form of knowledge transfer - solely the responsibility for the T's?

Again no offense. Asking only bcos I really want to understand what exactly are you unhappy about?
If my kid is guided well by the teacher, I have no issues at all.

Like I say, the school evaluates what they teach. I am absolutely ok.

I am unhappy about the school did not teach adequately what they expect students to do.

Let's talk about the national education program.

It is not their obligation to ensure that students are given the basic education that they need?

And not acting mainly as a testing center to filter out the elites (able to produce what is NOT taught).

If the child can do better, the elite or kiasu parents can send them to enrichment classes where they are taught or tested beyond what is taught at national public schools. It's their freedom.

But to evaluate a kid beyond what is reasonably taught in the school just seems not right to me.

In relation to the other hot thread.. so, did the teachers/school/MOE contribute to the unhealthy(?) unnecessary(?)/excessive(?) tuition phenomenon? or was it entirely parent's fault?

It's Before and After School Care, it's like childcare centre for pre-school aged kids. Working parents will send their primary school going kids there. The kids will bathe, eat brekkie and lunch, and complete their homework in BASC. There are teachers, not from MOE, who will guide the kids in their homework and there's revision. Of course there are average and better BASC lah
