Teaching Chinese at Home

Good recommendation there.
I inherited some of these Panasia books and borrowed some from library.
Cannot afford to buy complete set as they are very costly. for those who can, this is good investment. Books are very well formulated. Can pass down to next siblings.
Panasia has been around for 30 over years or more liao…

Hi there,
Thanks for all the reply. As a person with no chinese educational background, I prefer Chinese books with HYPY / billingual.
For the Odonata books, I bought the \"100 words\" set from Popular (8 books + 1 Audio CD + flashcards), around S$36+ (after 10% off). I went to the publisher website and compare the price there (in RM), etc. To make the story short, the publisher gave 1 agent contact in Johor that sells the books!
JB UNI SUCCESS
41, Jalan Molek 1/8,
Taman Molek, 81100
Johor Bahru, Johor.
Tel: 07-3560 666
So, I decided to buy the rest of the sets from them (get them to deliver the books to my friend's house in JB). Ie: 200 words set (8 books + 1 audio CD + flash card = RM44 + RM6.3 + RM18.5). They give 25% off, become RM51.6 (around S$22-23 in total).
Em,
The books from PanAsia, is there English translation there?
By the way, I found some other Singapore website selling Chinese books (graded level):
http://scrollinc.com/product.html
http://www.edventurebooks.com/tiptop/index.html
http://www.tokomama.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=164_268
Thanks... -
KLR31,
Thanks for sharing the websites!
PanAsia books mainly do not come with hanyupinyin as this is in a way
to train the child recognise the character.
However, they do have selected series that have English together with Chinese. If you have a Berries learning centre near you, pop by, they may have PanAsia story books on a shelf at the waiting area.

Hi Parents
I know that a lot of parents sent their kids to chinese enrichment classes. So I wonder if there is any exception here?
Any parent teaches your kids (p3 and above) chinese at home? I have been helping my children with their revisions since P1. I helped them with whatever that were taught in school only. However, as my DS1 will be going to P3 and DS2 going to P2 next year, I presume the level of difficulty and expectations would be much higher. Therefore in order to continue to teach them effectively, I believe I have to first set up a systematic programme. Hence, anyone care to share how you coach your kids? For example, how do you organise activities to help them to improve their vocabs and writing skills. Do you let them do more reading, writing etc. What are the reference books that you used?
And for those who sent their children to enrichment class, would you mind sharing what the kids learn during the lessons?
A million thanks! -

My girl has finished her Berries K2 class this year. She says that she does not want to continue, so I am not going to put her in the P1 class.
I will try to teach her at home. My plan is to find very interesting Chinese story books that she will love, and I will let her read a few pages out loud to me everyday. Books that will make her want to turn the pages and read to find out what happens next. For example, she loves these books :
http://product.dangdang.com/product.aspx?product_id=20349132
http://www.postimage.org/image.php?v=gx1lc6vr
http://product.dangdang.com/product.aspx?product_id=9115611
http://www.postimage.org/image.php?v=aVMZWT9
On every page, there are about 3 to 5 difficult words which she has not learned before, I will write them down and revise with her. I realized that it is best not to let her read books with hanyu pinyin because she may become too dependent on it.
My first step is to let her read as much possible. I believe that if she has been reading a lot, she will naturally know how to write well. She is already writing very short compositions of 2 to 3 Chinese sentences. When I was young, I did not attend any enrichment classes, but I love to read Chinese books and I did well enough for Chinese. -

Tamarind, just want to say a big THANK YOU for recommending the Sage books in this thread. Flashcards (he hates them!), wink to learn DVD and the readers recommended by Schellen all couldn't make my boy (just turned 3) recognise and read chinese characters. But the Sage books are amazing, in about 3 mths, he completed the 5 books in the Beginner series, that means learning his 1st 100 characters! He loves the cute illustrations in the books and the large word size helps to encourage reading.
According to Popular, this book has been on the market for quite some time already and the publisher has decided not to print anymore. Therefore, what you see on the shelves at Popular and on their website, is what you can get. I guess maybe you can try trading forums and online auctions?k1r31:
Just read \"tamarind\" post regarding Sage books from Popular. Looks like http://www.popular.com.sg don't sell these books anymore. Found the website from HK instead:
http://www.sagebooks.com.hk/component/option,com_virtuemart/page,shop.browse/category_id,7/Itemid,26/
They are selling 1 book at HK$109, so 5 books total HK$545 (S$98.0376). Wow....quite exp (compare to popular selling at S$5.9 each?)
Anyone knows where to find this book in Singapore? Thanks....
I am currently residing overseas and bought the books directly from the HK publisher. The HKD 109 price includes delivery and shipping costs regardless of the destination. Asked them why Popular is able to sell them at S$5.90 but they didn't respond on that. The funny thing was the books are retailing at HKD 48 in HK!
There are altogether 5 levels (5 books in each level). I am eager to purchase the subsequent levels. Unfortunately, they do not publish simplified version for them. I wonder why

You are welcome
It is amazing that your boy who just turned 3 is able to complete the 5 books ! He is very bright. I think children are more interested to learn from books with complete sentences, as compared to flash cards or learning individual words.
I am trying to get the following series of books from http://www.dangdang.com. I have never seen it before, but there are excellent reviews. My credit card cannot work with http://www.dangdang.com, still looking for ways to buy this series.

A very cute customer review :

Ditto. I never borrow Chinese books with hanyu pinyin for mine. & I pride myself for his strong word recognition due to this
& for kids with phonics background - hanyu pinyin is a breeze to pick up. -

Hi Tamarind, for S'pore issued credit cards, dangdang only accepts citibank. This is because only citibank card offers this visa/master card secure code thing. I had ordered from dangdang before (once). Then blur like sotong me cancelled my citibank card few mths ago, forgetting that this is the only card that I can purchase from dangdang. I LOVE the wide collection of chinese books from dangdang too. Thanks for your recommendation above. Yeah, the reviews are so fantastic. Now, I am keen to get it too but too bad, I don't have citibank card now
