The title of the essay writing is '让我意想不到的一件事'.

One of the keywords here is '意想不到'.

I believe that the child's storyline is relevant because she expected herself to top the competiton but was surprised not to do so in the end due to her bad judgment. Well, the stumble was unexpected, the result was even unexpected hence I feel the content is good and safe. Cheer 😄

I agree that the ‘unexpected thing’ on this Ming ti refers to something which one never thinks of happening or the possibility rate is not high…the comp.mentioned may be quite an event that can happen anytime…if possible please advise dc not to write Ming ti cos it is not easy to score unless u are very sure about it so don take risk…rem once my dd’s pri.school time during prelim exam quite a number of students wrote ming ti, the teacher scolded them as most of them either Li ti or not able to express well, the teacher told them please please never write Ming ti…even she as a teacher also said that(I actually understand her meaning, but then to actually pleading with the students not to attempt like a bit off leh)…anyway, I really made sure that dd always do the picture comp in class and not try to be 'funny’to do the ming ti.

I agree totally with you. Some of the options to the questions were a bit too close too each other, meaning that both options were somewhat correct languagewise. Especially for the 短文填空 section, where some options could fit exactly into the context of the passage. What the MOE aims to test is the ability of the pupils to understand the language and express themsleves with good word choice and not testing the pupils on their ability to try to nitpick on the options and sieve out the 0.1% difference between the two. Either the setters are too strict, or they are simply careless. 🤷
                  One of the questions:
                  我是一张白纸,我的 (1. 志愿 2. 目的 3. 作用) 是让同学们在我身上写出美美的字,然后交给老师批改。(or something like that)
Strictly speaking, 志愿 and 目的 should be accepted, given that the passage is personifying the piece of paper. On the other hand, one can reason that the paper is still an object and the personification is just a literary device hence we can say 作用。

However, the comprehension was rather straightforward; I have no complaints about that. 😉

That's interesting. If the phrasing is like that, then I would lean towards 作用, because the 然后交给老师批改 implies it's a specific procedure that the paper intends to goes through. I feel a 志愿/愿望 wouldn't be so specific. If it were 涂鸦 I would lean more towards

Still, the options are kind of close and depend very much on the surrounding context, so it's still a bit tough on the students. Haiz.

Now that you mention that, it could be 涂鸦 also, but I think regardless of whether it was 涂鸦 or 写出美美的字,I think both answers should be accepted.

For all you know, there might not be only one correct answer.
