Population woes
-
Jurong East MRT station is already the most congested station now.
I can’t imagine what will happen after the entire lakeside area become developed. No planning of extra transport capacity as of now. Even if they start planning now, it can’t go online in time. -
Any statistic to support your 50% claim?
Artificially depressed? So that people’s HDB flat price will go up, how wonderful…[/quote]
There was some population statistics published a couple of months back. SCs and foreigners are now 60:40. This was official gov stats, pls go and look it up. The SCs include retirees and kids. So if just compare the actual workforce, I think my estimation of 50:50 is not too far off. And this marches my personal experience as well.
The hdb flat supply was drastically cut because previously there was an oversupply. Many 1st timers were pushed to the resale market. However, at the same time that they cut the new HDB flats supply, many foreigners came here and was granted almost immediate PRs. Reduced supply plus increased demands, so what happens to flat prices? Google to find the number of new flats built by HDB per year for the last 10 years, and compare that with population growth for the same period, you"ll understand what I mean -

hello, I said cleaners, not PMET!
I guarantee you that if they advertise PMET positions at minimum wage, there won't be any response from SCs with the necessary qualifications.Dora1:
I am saying similar policies, can't the million dollar ministers and quarter million senior servants tweak it to SG context? Special skill could be chef, carpenter, plumber, construction builders? And for jobs like cleaners, if they advertised for x number of weeks with a pay higher than the min wage, then they allowed to hire FWs if no SCs respond. -

自己的刀不够利, 却因此要求政府规定全人民不能用刀?
有时间应该用来思考如何磨利自己的刀,而不是禁止别人用! -

I am not anti foreigner. I have wonderful friends who are foreigners. My best friend is a PR. but there are clearly cracks and wrong policies that needs to be addressed before they become real problems. There will never be a best solution, we are not living in the shangri- la land... But this so far work the best, thus we have affordable roofs, we have cheap meals, we have efficient and affordable transports, we have highly educated off springs... Our economy grow, our jobless rate is one of the lowest...
If no FT/FW, many many many local SME will move to Malaysia, Indonesia, Myanmar... or fold!
Read my 1st post in this thread on why I feel that companies will move out if we continue to employ FTs indiscriminately.
By the way, are all the FTs really better than SCs? If you tell me FTs 10 years ago, yes they were really more hardworking, capable etc. but I'm not sure abt the recent ones. There are of cos good ones, but the CMI ones are also plentiful -
We have to urge the gov to put 10 brains behind each cleaner hired… (??)
Sigh. 夏虫不能语冰。 -

Unless you want the government to micro-manage businesses to death with a list of job descriptions the size of a phonebook stating what positions are open to FTs and what positions are not. -

Whether they are better or worse... they contribute to our nation's growth. Let's give them their due credit. -

Ya, it could be this 40% PR's additional spending that's keeping the jobs coming, sustaining the already weaken economy. Don't forget the last quarter's growth was only 1.5% Q2Q. -
