P2 Math - General Discussion
-
Tried the sum out with DS who is in K2. I let him read the question on his own. After reading, the first thing he put down was 4 and 4. Told him to read the question again. Then had to explain to him that the question is asking how many ways, not how many of each puff can be put into the box. Immediately he started listing down the combinations.
Asked his teacher to try it out with the rest of the K2s, feedback is most of them made the same assumption, that the question is asking for how many of each puff in each box and came with answers like 4+4 or 3+5. After explaining to the class what the question wanted, only 1 or 2 of them fully understood. -

hi RRMummy,
i had helped pose yr qn to Dr. Yeap. Below is his reply:-
'i think you can find some of these unusual questions in some books e.g. Olympiad for Juniors. I cannot recall the publishers, but you can find them at Popular bookshop, i believe.
the Number bond problem is well within P1 syllabus, but it is unusual which is a characteristic of a problem.'
parents who have got some hot, burning tricky or tough Maths qns to solve - may email, ask Dr. Yeap directly. Normally he place his answers in his blogspot, so as to benefit all parents (all nationalities) on internet.
another thing - regarding 'Bar model' visual method introduced into Maths curriculum, there was a parents workshop conducted recently at RGPS premises.
will be good if parents can download the slides quickly for your child - before this webpage on his blogspot suddenly gets refreshed one day, by something else new coming in. Once gone, you can't download anymore.

keep Dr. Yeap powerpoint slides answers. His slides will come in useful, handy one day, benefit your child. All questions & solutions he went through at this 3 hrs long workshop ($30 per parent) covered P1-P6 Maths qns tested.
many primary schools in SG are still waiting eagerly for their turn, to invite this guru down their respective schools to teach the parents. But school does not know exactly when is their turn. School need to queue up patiently for their turn, one by one. Instead of waiting, why not download his slides first ? go through yourself quickly to refresh yourself first, before you know how to teach & guide your child, step by step ? -

The questions are the non-routine questions that may found in P1 or P2 exam. Questions are not too tough, but a good book to have so as to expose the child to all the non-routine sums. -
