Janet, I believe it is ok to introduce model drawing to your child if your child's math foundation is already established. Also if he/she is a visual learner, model diagram will appeal to him/her. However, if you tried and there is resistance or signs of not-ready, then you should not force it as it may have adverse effects later.

Hubby will start younger one on Models next year. I bought the problem-solving by Simon Eio. It's good to start her on models earlier so that she gains experience early and can solve problem sums.

Hi, my boy’s school for P1 hasn’t started teaching models yet.

Has the teachers from your children’s school started teaching models already?

My son only learnt models in P3, which is actually rather late. If you go to Popular, you will see assessment books teaching Models from P2. My hubby is reinforcing Math concepts with daughter. We are learning from experience, the what-not-to-do with her now.

ds1 in neighbourhood school, learn models at P2.
though i spent quite some time in K2/P1 teaching him models before hand, he couldn't grasp it (ie didn't know when to use which model). he can grasp it now either because he is 'ready' or that his teacher's teaching method is clearer (also now i know what is 'part-whole' or 'comparison' model) 😉.

So diff schools do go on different pace on models, weird right?

Is your DS1 using the model ruler to draw models?

yes. they are supposed to use model ruler to draw models. i think the class purchase it from the teacher; ds1 already broke his model ruler (crushed by all the junk stuff in his bag , but it is still usable.

                    Hi Jedamum,
Can I check what is a model ruler? Can I get it from Popular? My gal is P2 this year and her teacher is very strict with their presentation of the model - she will deduct marks if the model is not drawn using a ruler even that the answer is correct.

                    Thank you.

Don’t you guys think the model ruler is sort of filmsy and breaks easily? The top part if I not wrong.

Yes it breaks easily and personally I don't think it is that useful as it is not a complete stencil...using a ruler is even better.. 😉
