info … Primary 1 Maths onwards.

every 5 to 7 years, MOE may revise Maths curriculum.
from 2013 onwards, could be new changes to Maths curriculum methodology.

some schools in P1 - later part of the year, Term 4 onwards, pupils are taught ‘Bar Modeling’.

a powerful new concept newly introduced to schools, solve word problems.

why ? because it is visual !

when is visual, pupils can ‘see’. Pupils thus find easier to understand, grasp complex, abstract Maths concepts more confidently.

this is a new move invented recently – move away from the old, traditional ‘Algebra’ method of solving Maths, where pupils tend to get confused, lost, don’t know how to begin / solve, esp. if the question gets complicated.

to tackle word problems proficiently, 2 types of skill set are required nowadays (both English and Maths skills), from a child:-

        i) the ability to read & comprehend the qn in English,
ii) the ability to interpret the figures given & then apply the correct Maths concept.

        some schools have started.

may attend ‘Maths workshop for Parents on Maths Problem Solving, using the 'Model Method’, by Dr. Yeap Ban Har.

can download his powerpoint slides, print out in color.
Questions and answers are found together, inside his slides.

learn to help your child solve Maths problems, using 'Model' method.

first part of his workshop focus on the basic model.
second part focus on advanced skills needed for solving challenging problems.

        1)\t Raffles Girls’ primary

        only first question is P1 / P2.
the rest are higher level, P3 to P6:-

download powerpoint slides – before this web page blog spot gets refreshed. Once gone, each parent pay $30, attend the 3 hrs workshop. Furthermore, may wait a long time before the … next parents workshop is conducted again ?

if your child in kindergarten K2 now - download first, keep for future use. Slides come in useful, handy one day!

I thought the current math curriculum in school is using 'model' to solve word problems?? Model is not the same as 'Bar modelling'?? :?

Thanks for sharing the useful links to the various powerpoint slides.
            :thankyou:

                  YKVT:
Bar modeling is something like graphs right?

bar modeling and graphs are different.
essentially, graphs are usually given and students are supposed to draw datas from the graphs based on the questions asked (eg a graph is given and question ask 'how many children like to eat cake?' and the students look at the graph to find the data.). for bar modeling, a problem sum is given and students need to draw the correct bar models to illustrate how they are going to solve that problem sum.

                    hi PiggyLalala,

                    Yes, the same.

‘Bar model’ is an American term.
in Singapore, it is called the ‘model’ method.

In P1, so far no textbook use model. If a school does teach, will be on their own initiatives. In P1 modeling, teachers teach this in class using real, concrete material.

in P2, teachers teach using unifix cubes.

the above book written by Dr. Yeap entitled ‘Bar Model– Problem Solving approach’ is a guide book meant for parents to teach and guide their children at home. It is not a school text used by pupils in P1, P2.

btw, YKVT – jedamum is right. ‘Bar model’ nothing to do with graphs. Perhaps you can download, go thru all Dr. Yeap powerpoint slides, try understand. The questions & answers come together, in the slides !

formally, 'Bar model' will be introduced to pupils from P2 onwards.

but some schools start slightly earlier - say, around P1 Term 4.

at the moment, this concept not clear to parents, students.
that's why Dr. Yeap is being highly sought after now - by educators, parents, to conduct seminar, workshop. His diary is fully packed till December. A number of primary schools in SG are queuing up patiently one by one, inviting him to go down their respective school conduct workshop, explain to parents clearly from P1 to P6 what this new stuff is all about.

Nothing is more important than paying attention in class. I believe that no assessment books can replace the teachings of the teacher itself. Surely the teacher will teach or give scaffolding to what will be tested in the coming exams.
