      sashimi:
JLPT1 is not very hard - it is apparently insanely hard. I hear even the Japanese are scared of it. schellen can tell you more - she nearly passed it last year, alas but for a handful of marks.

btw you should inform your daughter that starting 2010, the system is changing from the 4 levels (JLPT4-1) to a new 5-level system, N5 to N1. N2 will be the equivalent of JLPT2, but there'll be a new level between JLPT2 and JLPT3 called N3. I'm aiming for that qualification in 2010. N1 is apparently going to be even harder than JLPT1.
Yes, it is a scary paper, even my teachers said that, and they are native Japanese. This is because the paper also tests you on stuff that are not in daily usage, conversation or otherwise. You will face kanji that are beyond the commonly used 1,500. My teachers say that if you read Japanese newspapers and novels/literature often, you should not have much of a problem. Watch out too for onomatopeia, proverbs and reading comprehension articles that deal with surveys or reports from various fields.

The school that sashimi and I attend is very small but fees are very affordable and teachers very dedicated (they helped me pass JLPT2!) so I will only attend JLPT1 prep course at this school. Unfortunately, JLPT1 is not something people will usually want to undertake so they don't have a prep course for JLPT1....unless I can find at least 4 other people to start a class with me, and these 4 should not drop out halfway.

I refuse to attend other schs' prep course due to the following:
      1. higher fees
      2. further distance from my workplace (the sch I want to attend is within walking distance from my workplace)
      3. no guarantee that I will get a good, dedicated teacher who is a native speaker
      4. bad feedback from a friend who attended a reputable sch before attending this sch (and passed!)
      5. last but not least, I dislike how sometimes profit-driven schs will \"pressurise\" you into signing up for JLPT when you are taking their normal course, just so that if you pass, you enable their sch to become even more reputable (e.g., \"Join us! XX% of our students attained JLPT1/2/3/4!\")

So , in the end, I bought revision books and guides from Kinokuniya and studied on my own. I should've started revision earlier and pushed myself harder. Really regret it. I didn't expect to pass; in fact, I expected to fail very badly. However, when I got my result slip, I was shocked to discover that I had only failed by 27 marks! (This is not a lot considering how they allocate a lot of marks per question.)

I may try again next year for N1, if I really feel up to it. Sigh...

I think the other thing to note is that besides mugging hard for JLPT, the other thing that really helped me was the opportunity to constantly use the language. I have to use Jap daily in my work and occasionally, I translate English documents into Jap.

Do note that not only will there be changes to the structure of the tests, the fees for registration have also increased since last year. If you pass JLPT 1, you are eligible for entry into Jap universities (provided you fulfill their other requirements, of course) and you can teach Jap.

Quite a few... the two that come to mind are:
        ZacK
        EN
        ChiefKiasu's DW (Does she count?)

Just received my module 1 results in the mail today... kekeke managed to scrape a pass... 4 marks away from fail grade actually ... DW will always  when I cant finish studying before the exam ... but knowing that a pass for me is quite a miracle in itself... will still :hugs: when I clear my paper.

I am the type of students that teachers and parents hate to have cos I'm super lazy and will only study to pass šŸ™ ... Dun expect me to prepare in advance for classes or do assignments... Took 2 days of leave to study and on the 3rd day go for exam :!: ... And I wonder why my blood pressure is always HIGH perhaps always living close to the edge šŸ˜›

Wonder if I am setting a bad example for DSes or perhaps I'm helping them to mentally prepare DW's expectation on them when they take their exams in future 😐

            Congrats on passing!! :celebrate:
My husband is your type. He spent 48hrs wrapping up his honours final year project when he had 6mths. Bearly passed and he still hip hip hooray cos it's finally over . Last min assignments, the next day exam, the day before still play online games :x ; then 11th hour do last min revision. Not some major paper, just some certification; he didn't want to go indepth cos he said it isn't essential at his current level yet (btw, he has a big book of certs ). He is waiting for the next intake to study for some more certification. can get his coy to subsidise in exchange for some bond.
And we keep all his last min antics out of ds1's earshot.....he can't know that his dad is a last-min-man. šŸ˜‰

I'm sure your hubs amd I would be great friends haha... Actually for people like us... Wonder what will happen if we are more conscientious and put in a lot more study time??! ... Hmmm Prof Brainy we are not!... So this is the best that you will get out from us šŸ˜‰

And mind you that does not mean that we do not produce good quality work... We will prioritise and weigh the cost benefit and do enough to get the work done according to the benefit it will bring šŸ˜„

                  insider:
Thanks sashimi and schellen for your helpful advice!

My friends have been really working hard for JLPT1 as said and two of them ever been to Japan for two years to work and study the language and one other friend is a trader for Japanese market, basically use Japanese everyday in their work.

Schellen, do you mind to share which institution you go to for your JLPT2 lessons? My daughter is interested in pursuing it but somehow I know self study not easy (tho can tell that she is determined, still feel it's difficult to learn alone). Will get her to check the schedule of the institution to see whether she is keen to squeeze the lessons into her routine or not. Think probably she has to choose among her hot yoga and electric guitar lessons if want to take lessons for JLPT2. So got to depend on the schedule available...
You're welcome. šŸ™‚ It's at Tenrikyo Mission Center's Cultural Section, located at 25th floor of International Plaza (next to Tanjong Pagar MRT station). Although they are from a religious group, you do not have to convert or be subjected to their religious teachings, unless you choose to. I think sashimi can give you a better idea of the lesson schedule for classes since he'll be starting normal and JLPT3 prep classes next week. Or you can call them: 62214035 anytime from 3-8pm on weekdays and 10/11-4 on Saturdays. All lessons start next week. JLPT prep course is once a week and only one day (per level) so your DD may have to check her schedule first. It will end during the week of JLPT so this year, the week will be Nov 30-Dec 3. You pay for course materials, usage of facilities and a half-year membership that allows you to borrow stuff from their (small but comprehensive) library and join in their other activities. Teachers are here on a 2-year service as part of their religion, I think, so there are no tutor fees. We paid in cash so I don't know if cheques are accepted. No NETS or credit cards.

Yeah, self-studying a language is not helpful. One needs to actively use it - with classmates, colleagues, etc.

I study at Tenrikyo, as schellen mentions. Tenrikyo is one of the many religions in Japan. \"Tenrikyo's worldly aim is to teach and promote the Joyous Life, which is cultivated through acts of charity and mindfulness called hinokishin.\" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tenrikyo). Tenrikyo is not evangelist in any way. They are in fact, a bunch of very amusing, cheerful people with no airs whatsoever. I love the staff, esp. my current teacher. We just a got a new principal and he's very funny and cool, who strikes 1001 poses in photographs and can also play the one-man band. Oh, and the male teachers are always very popular with the girls.....

                    I digress.

The thing about Tenrikyo's courses is that it's relaxed and slow - provided you want that (good for busy people). They teach the same course materials as, say, Ikoma, but at half the pace. Lessons are 2 hours per week for each level. Costwise it's only $430 for a full year inclusive of textbook and membership fees (one level, there are a total of 7). JLPT prep course is $85.

In fact, if anyone wants to take the JLPT prep courses, this semester comes with my highest recommendation, cos the teacher doing it is very good. She's very nice, very smart, bubbly personality and dedicated. I'm going to miss her when she goes home next year.

JLPT3 prep is on Tues 6.30-8.40, starting Aug 4. I need to double-check which day JLPT2 prep is on, will get back. Registrations on open right now btw. You can call Lucien-san at 62214035 between 2-8pm to find out more.

Kind of unsure what I can do but the result sometimes can be surreal.
