              Hi there

i am going to enroll my son in red swastika for P1 in yr 2012. He has a bit of sensory processing issues. Anybody can advise me whether the support in this school for special needs kids is good.

              Appreciate all yr advise.

              Thks & rdgs,
DS had mild Dylexia and ADHD. Currently attending RSS special guidance classes on Wed for kids with special needs. So far okay. We supplement with DAS classes twice a week too.

However if you are thinking about classroom setting, where the teachers will attend or teach him better, my answer is no. They will only take note of the special needs kids by giving allowances such as bring homework home, more time do assignments etc. Guess that is best a teacher can do, with so many kids to attend to.

              Hope this helps 😉

                Hi dicky

What do they teach in RSS special guidance class? And what is DAS?

Besides classroom settings, do they assign AED to special needs kids so we can liase with them to have a support plan for the kid?

How many students are there in one class and generally are the teachers there good and caring for these special need kids?

Am so worried for my son when he attends P1 next yr.

                Appreciate yr reply.

                Rgds,

                  Rgds,
Not too sure the questions, but I try my best..

You can simply inform RSS of the special needs, and they will arrange. RSS have a Allied Educator who is trained in handling special needs kids. My personal experiences is that RSS Allied Educator will arrange weekly sessions, but it is not their main aim to provide expertise, diagnosis and the likes, then create a support plan and regular meetings with parent etc.... More for helping the kid to cope with mainstream school cirriculum.

If yr kid already have special sessions for his disability, this educator almost uses the same technique/method to give remedial lessons to yr kids. That why I request that DS Allied Educator to work with DAS to achieve better outcome, and no replication of lesson materials. DAS is Dylexia Association of Singapore, DS attending to learn phonics, morale building, overcame what he call \"letters floating around\" when reading. The allied educator will probably cover other behavioural aspects like concentration focus in ADHD(I think so). So that DS can cope better with his school homeworks....

There will be no more than 5 kids in 1 class, however the kids may be of different P levels. DS class weekly 1.5hrs, and only 2 kids including him. Good and caring teachers? I cant answer that. But I rather they are treating DS same as other kids, no fuss just because he has special needs. As DAS advised us, fussing over his special needs makes him feel inferior, and his morale worse-off.

Frankly speaking, we were very worried for DS like you were. But we decided that he still attend mainstream schools and try. Perhaps P3 request to stay back 1 year if he cant cope since he is December child somemore. We will just do what we can for him, and leave the rest to him (when we can see that he is trying his best already).

                        Hi Everyone,

I am trying to apply for volunteer to get my son into Red Swastika. Called them but was not given much info. I heard should submit parents’ CV? any good tips to help increase the chance of being selected as a volunteer?

                        Thanks,

                        cais
