On the CHS website, information regarding days for CCA, enrichment, remedial and supplementary lessons for 2012 for P1 to P6 is newly listed.

      http://www.catholichigh.moe.edu.sg/

It is stated that Wed and Thur are reserved for remedial and supplementary lessons. What is this? Can I check with other parents if there are remedial and supplementary lessons for P1 students? I am currently trying to plan my boy's schedule for external enrichment lessons next year e.g. swimming and need to know the \"free\" afternoons. Grateful for any advice. Thanks.

By the way, it's been a great P1 orientation day today! I was really impressed with the performance by their string ensemble.

Do P1/p2s have supplementary lessons? I think usually don't have, right? Generally start in p3, and for those levels, usually the extra day is Thursday, I think. Carpark very crowded on Thursday afternoons. Wednesdays maybe more for the remedial classes. But generally the extra lessons depend on the teachers/individual classes too. Usually by p5, they stay back wed/thursdays plus CCA days.

So are you going to encourage your boy to join the string ensemble? My elder boy was in STrings from p2-p6(also band from p2-p4). My younger boy was in Chinese orch from p1-p6. They all had a great time!

Dear phankao, thanks for your reply. :thankyou:

I hope too that P1/P2 do not have supplementary lessons. I would think that it is more to prepare the upper Primary boys for PSLE? Thanks for your information, I think my boy should be able to get Wed and Thu afternoons \"free\" in that case.
Wow! Your boys are so musically talented, esp. your elder boy. How did your elder boy manage his time? I thought one aesthetic CCA is already pretty \"siong\" in terms of practice time, he took two! It is really great that your boys had a wonderful experience with strings ensemble and Chinese Orch. Actually I am not sure if my boy would be interested in string ensemble. I think he is still developing his interests, and I do not know for sure if he would be interested to learn the violin or viola, etc. Currently, except for piano, he is not learning any other string instrument. I put it down anyway in the orientation survey form as I thought that we had to choose one.

May I ask for some further advice please? I find that it is a bit difficult to \"fix\" my boy's interests at his age now - don't know if it is normal but his interests keep changing. If he is assigned a CCA at P1 which he finds after a term or two, he has no interest, can he reject or change CCA? If he joins the string ensemble, do we have to sign him up for external private music lessons in the instrument chosen/assigned? Or does the school provide the lessons? How about other enrichment clubs like Chinese Chess and Young Aviator - he was really bowled over by the gigantic Chinese Chess set mounted on the wall, and the various plane models displayed in the Young Aviator room. Can he join the enrichment clubs without joining a CCA? Or must he join a CCA first, then be \"eligible\" for enrichment clubs?

My elder boy has always loved the busy life somehow, even now. He'll be in Sec 3 next yr. He would go half for strings practice, and then half for band, etc. He only started to learn violin in P2 when he wanted to join the string ensemble. He took the classes in school(for a fee and lesson times are separate from practice times) but eventually moved on to individual lessons privately. He had no other musical training before then. For Chinese Orchestra, I think the boys can take their lessons in school during practice times. I'm not sure if this has changed. You have to ask the Teacher-in-charge.

I'm not sure about how to join those other CCAs like Aviators or Flying. You'd really have to check with the teachers-in-charge.

              Hi Phankao,

May I check with you, what is the procedures at CHS, on PSLE results-released day (likely to be 24/11)?

Can parents stay in the hall with their kids, or they have to wait in the canteen, as mentioned by some parents from other schools? Will the pupils receive their PSLE results slips from the principal in the hall, or they have to go to their individual classrooms to get the results slips from their teachers?

              Thanks!

                  1. Yes, he can reject.
                  2. Yes, he can change CCA too, provided the one that he would like to join has vacancy. You will have to make a request and get approval from the HOD. My ds2 just made a switch from basketball to strings last month. But I think if he were to switch from strings to basketball, it would be near impossible!
                  3. External music lessons - up to you, but i think quite a number of boys have external lessons. My two sons have violin lessons at home. But when my ds1 was playing the cello, they taught him during the cca and he played in the SYF in 2008. After that, he switched to violin.

Anyway, I hope your ds will have a great time at CHS. πŸ™‚
