I think there is no difference in teaching standards/quality of teachers among different precious stone classes. There is only a "feel good" factor to be in the diamond class.

Hi jedamum, i noticed there is no exam or oral tests for P1 and P2, wondering it is good for them.

i am not sure what is SA1, SA2..etc, those results will include in the year end results? hmm... confuse for 1st time mum ...aiks!

          ikae,
are there still any meet the parents session if there are no exams? if yes, ask the teacher when will there be streaming and if so, based on what criteria. prior to my son's batch, students are streamed at end of P1. my son although he had SA1 and SA2 during P1, there is no streaming at end of P1. then they abolished SA1 and have SA2 last year. then basing 100% on this SA2 results, students are streamed into different P3 classes at end of P2. i feel that this may not be a fair gauge to stream based only on one exam. and there is no formal notice to inform parents that there are streaming at which level. if the school is going to do so for your kid's batch, it is better for you to keep up with the revision at home.
SA1 is exam around May and SA2 exam is around october. for my boy, this year, their SA1, CA2 and SA2 are all taken into consideration for computing the year end results.

Hi jedamum, we received letterand it shown all exams for p3-p6, incl. oral exam too. But they didn't state exam for P1 and P2, so it mean that there is no exam for P1? what is the full term for SA1 and SA2? :scratchhead:

And, i am not sure has teacher meets parents session for P1 and P2 since no exam. The letter stated meet parents session is around end May but not sure included P1 and P2 since no exam

We always received those papers like she did in the school and took back for signature. We are not sure it is called test? or what? no \"test\" stated in the papers...aiks!

so it means to say that no more streaming end of P1...hmm...

maybe ba! but maybe the better the class is (supposed to be), the teacher is stricter? wonder if they will 'stream' again end of this year....

i think no exam for p1 and p2 if not stated. even if have, by now exams over already.
have to wait for a letter to see have meet parents anot. i think should have.
those papers that they did in class is 'Unit Review'. a short test after each chapter. marks not counted.
looks like no 'streaming' by end of P1. but i believe still have show and tell these type of things. enjoy the lower primary ah. P3 is a big jump. my ds1 now learning to complete as much homework in between lessons in school. when school just started last sem, he did his homework until 9pm daily on weekdays!

Hi ikae, i kaypo here.

Whether or not the absence of tests are good for the children or not truly
depends on how the individual parents look at it. While some parents take
this opportunity (with extra time not having to mug/revise) to teach stuff
outside the syllabus.. fun stuff... πŸ˜‰... other parents do still follow up
with say... purchased assessment books or/and top school papers. No
pressure. But just to be assured that the child(ren) have understood the
lessons taught during the first semester. (Jan to June)

                  ikae:

Yes, if children are doing actual exams, a percentage from SA1 combined
with the results from exams done during SA2 will give a combined final grade.
                  ikae:

Yep, that usually means no formal testing / exams but children will be graded
according to the rubrics from what has been done in class. Some schools incl
show and tell presentation into the final grading and presents them as first
                  semester progress assessment.

The full term is Semestral Examinations.

SA1 refers to first half of the year.
SA2 refers to the second half of the year.

I usually try to push my girls for better grades for SA1 since it covers like 4
to 5 months of work as compared to a whole year's work & testing for SA2.. πŸ˜“

Whether or not there's exam, usually there will be such sessions for all levels.
These sessions help parents to look into the doubts parents may have with
regards to how the child is coping with the school syllabus & how children
                  are monitored using the rubrics.

For both the schools my girls attend(ed), the papers will tabulate the eventual
formative assessment grades according to the rubrics. Children are evaluated
from a variety of assessments and some may include self help skills, social
skills, presentation skills.. (etc) Those you've signed are the basis of what
has been covered in class as per the syllabus and materials prepared by
the teachers. They are like a combination of worksheets & topical
assessments. If your child has been doing well so far that means
he or she is coping well and understands lessons well. πŸ˜„
                  ikae:
so it means to say that no more streaming end of P1...hmm...
This is probably true (no streaming end of P1)... for of late we've been hearing
that the same teachers follow up with the same P1 class in P2 the following year.
Some schools do the official testing at the end of P1 meaning they sit for the year
end exams (SA2) while some others may only have this at the end of P2.

                      Dear Jedamum,

Funny, my son although in P4, never had so much homework. This year, some days he did work though the afternoon but not into the night.

although no streaming at end of P1, not sure if the school will stream students into different chinese language classes based on class tests. if i remember correctly, they were streamed based on 1st few tests in P1. better to check with the respective teachers if you are interested to find out because i think for chinese, first 2 classes (or more?) covers all topics in the 1 chapter with additional spelling words (for p3, not sure if p1/p2 different anot. can't remember. sorry) while other classes only do 2 (or 1?) topics in the 1 chapter).
