      nansk:
My dd wears a pinafore and PE shorts every day. The regular shirt/PE shirt is worn based on whether there is PE that day.

Ok thanks for the affirmation... that means the kids have to remove their pinafores before the PE lessons and wear it back themselves after ...
I remembered some schools allow their kids to be on their PE attire without the pinafore during days that have PE lessons.

        Dear Parents,

Have you been noticing a slew of letters from school asking us to sign up for english books/ math worksheets/ etc and they are from private providers?(e.g Little Red Dot)

Are these really necessary ? Shouldnt the home work from the teachers suffice? Why must the school actively pass the children so many requests from different private providers to sign up for such materials?

        Confused mama

You really have received a slew of letters in two weeks?!

We have received only the one from Little Red Dot. We didn't sign up. Simple as that.

P1-P2 is the time to learn to adjust to school and timetables, homework and mini-assesments. We don't sign up for any after-school classes or extra worksheets.

The school is making some extra enrichment opportunities available for parents who want these options but may not be aware of all that is available. There may also be a volume discount by signing up through the school. But the teacher has clearly communicated to the girls that these worksheets are optional.

There is one that is sort-of necessary - the Marshall Cavendish Online portal - but that is a homework resource all schools in Sg are using; and it uses your Edusave$, so that is not a financial consideration as such.

Why can it not be both? πŸ™‚ Why must academics suffer if character development is emphasized? Or vice versa?

To be honest, the school principal and teachers are the best person to address such a question to. But, as a parent, my perception is, that the school inculcates good character development through their GIRRL mnemonic. At the same time, the PSLE 2011 results of the school are pretty good. So it is evident that the school also nurtures academic talent.

BTW, I hope you, and other parents reading this post, will agree that it is not entirely the school's responsibility to inculcate good values and manners in our little girls. I'd say the onus is 90% on us.

                Hi OrangeBelt,
                Thanks for the reply.

DD just passes to us and say .. \"Mama pay money\" πŸ˜›

                That really clears our doubts.

                \"Relieved\"

This implies that schools that emphasize character development don't teach academic concepts well. And conversely, that schools that emphasize academic performance neglect good character traits in their students! So, if (say) Rulang Primary focuses on turning out PSLE toppers, does that mean that Rulang students are not well-behaved? Or that CHIJ (Kellock) girls are better behaved than Rulang girls? This is a preposterous claim!

And even if such a claim is true, I, for one, would prefer to have my dd grow to be a well-behaved person, rather than have her score excellent results at PSLE, but be rude, bad-tempered, lazy, or whatever.

Have you, or those friends of yours, seen CHIJ (Kellock) girls' PSLE results closely?
