Interesting. May I know how you arrive at the conclusion that BTPS does not prepare the students well compared to other schools? Were you a primary school teacher formerly and have taught in many schools? What are the areas that BTPS has failed to deliver or delivered inadequately at P5/P6? \"Push hard\" meaning a lot of drilling homework, exams with difficult questions which failed many students at P5 in other schools?
And if you don't mind, could you please share how other schools start PSLE preparation at P5? I kept reading on the forum that PSLE preparation starts at P5. But how do they do it when the students are only beginning to study the relevant topics?
Well...I am just a SAHM. Being a Kiasu parent, we will share info and tips with others on the schooling matters. I understand that P6 syllabus will have to be completed by May or latest July. Some superkiasu schools will target to complete by March , afterwhich the next few mths would be solely revision and drilling for PSLE. This is understandable as PSLE covers topics from P3/P4 to P6.
I felt the preparation is insufficient as the school focuses mainly on textbook syllabus, with some supplementary workbook or worksheets for each topic.
Some parents had mentioned before, that PSLE is testing ar 70% from textbook. Henceforth, the kids are not well exposed to other 30% components. To fill this gap, we will have to turn to experience tutor or tuition centre who understand the PSLE requirements and able to help the kids to focus on the missing piece.
If you can get hold of the extra materials given by some schools, you will understand my viewpoint. I have seen some chinese oral package compiled by other school teachers. The THICK package consists of pictures, the vocab to master relating to the pictures as well as the \"model description for the picture\".
To score better in Chinese, I was told that it's important to focus on oral and listening comprehension which add up to 70marks( out of 200marks). I guess this are part of the strategies implemented by the schools that enable them to score abv national average.
Another 40marks come from compo, there's also limited material given to supplement this area. Of course, this require additional efforts from the school to compile the phrases for opening, ending and description of the emotional/appearance etc. I have feedback to school teachers on the current tin xie format. The list of words do not really value add to the kids. I suggest that they shd consider to give good phrases as tin xie. Well...my suggestion was not considered at all.
Currently, the school focuses on textbook which is just 90marks (or even less if we remove the comprehension ). Unfortunately, this component is difficult to score for most kids. Thus, I would expect the school to do more for the other two components.
I feel that Science is another subject that the kids are not well prepared. Currently, they are using SAM as the core learning tool. I like this idea as the kids are given opportunity to write down their own thoughts and learning. Having said that, it also depends on the kids' ability. Not all kids are able to grasp the key concepts and write down relevant observation. Thus I have difficulty to understand the learning outcomes or maybe to be able to get much info from my kid's SAM. This approach is very diff from the exam format in PSLE. With minimum practice on paper 1 and paper 2, the kids will not be able to do well. Esp for paper 2 which require certain answering technique. Again to fill this gap, we have to depend on tuition centre to guide them on paper 2.
I do not like to push kids real hard by drilling them to score well in exam. What I hope is my kid is able to go to a better second tier secondary school. To achieve this, the kid has to get at least 228 for the T-score. Will my kid able to reach this target? well, this is currently a uphill task but I will try my best to help my kid.[/quote]
I graduated from the school just a year ago and from my experience, I felt that textbooks was not really being used during lessons. In fact, when I was a primary 5 and 6 student, I did not need to bring english and science text books after January or so.
Also, I felt that Science preparations after primary three or four was rather sufficient.
There were lots of hands on activities and they were pretty much engaging, like making our own hot air balloons to test what factors could help the hot air balloons sustain in air longer, making terrariums to observe the water cycle in it, going to a lab dedicated to science (?) for experiments to prove hot air rises and can move or so, going to science centre trips like DNA labs (?), electricity carnivals,( this are activities I think teachers can applied for?) and even going to the science centre exhibition (CSI) once for free except for the bus trip.
Moreover, there was a Science Inspire day annually which pupils prepare Science exhibitions and teach other students Science with some experiments.
The one I could remember best is the science centre trip when I was primary 6 to teach us about habitats, environments and adaptations in May or something. (I don't have a good memory)
There were many more science activities and there were lots of drilling for primary 5 and 6. (There were too much Science related activities for me to remember)
Oh, also, teacher let us understand science even better through science videos and interesting songs about key concepts of science to help us remember the science topics better.
There were the regular Science (in classrooms) lessons as well, of course.
For math, I think drilling starts from primary 4 for my year.
This is when all those problem-solving heuristics come up and my teacher gave me lots and lots of homework.
But I am thankful as all those drilling certainly help me in math, and getting an A star in that subject [I used to hate math and was rather poor in math (I think i got band 2 in primary 2 for math)]
When I was a primary 6, I think we learn each topic slowly and when we learned the topics circles only during the june holidays but my cousins from other schools said they completed circles in march. However, the teacher covered each topic very well so we had very little queries about each topic.
For english, I think I might be the lousiest student in my class but the teacher must have taught me rather well but I don't about languages. Languages are something that must be mastered from young.
Of course, textbooks were needed some times, and the teacher highly recommend some science guide book.
This is just my experience, and maybe there aren't much to learn for primary 3 and 4??
Just my two cents worth

Hi, I’ve just join BTPS, the orientation day bring confident to us that this school is not too bad at all. Any advise how to do things or help your children in BTPS?
-
:? Let them enjoy their primary 1 and 2 lives and letting them learn what they want (piano, ballet)? They have plenty of time since primary 1 and 2 pupils weren't given much homework…
Now, it is the holidays and maybe you could let them enrolled in community club stuff and let them choose which activities they want? (forcing them isn't good and when I was in primary school (BTPS) they gave me a brochure on attending activities In Bukit Merah, there were activities like building robots or something??) -
I was looking through DS’s report card and I am wondering what std dev means.
