Mine took special program plus the usual triple science combi, competitive CCA, etc. I think the good thing about RGS here is that they only count GPA for 6 subjects. If she is good in math and science, that takes care of 3 out of 6 subjects already (1 math, 1 science and 1 math/science). If she is good in languages and humanities, that should also take care of 3 subjects too (EL, 1 + 1 humanities/special program). So she can focus on the remaining 3 subjects to maintain/pull up GPA?

Maybe it is the COVID-19 disruptions and the teachers were less stringent (?), I didn't see a jump in workload for my dd from S2 to S3 (her GPA even improved). Lakesidemum, does the 2 humanities include I&A? I heard most girls do either lit/Geo/history, along with the compulsory I&A which is considered a humanities subject.

When do they get to choose or be selected for RSP? Thank you in advance!

Hi, thank you for your compliments.. sometimes is tough to be a RGS parent, so much to “worry” and “manage”.. her workload, the long hours in school and after school (homework etc), peer pressure, leaderships duties etc etc.. but most of the time, I leave to her cos I can only be her facilitator, she has her own thinking that can hardly be changed at times, I just have to respect her. Sorry, digress too far off.

Ok, coming to her humanities, I&A is not one of them, so this is on top on the 2 humanities she will be taking..

For RSP, she was selected in term 1 in year 1. Just apply for it during orientation.

For my girl, she has 2 CCA days, third lang and a rather demanding RS too… So 4 days home after 7pm. By the time she settles down to work, is already close to 8.30pm… She is one that needs lots of sleep, so she tries to sleep by 10.30pm and gets up at 6am. Hence, she has to burn her weekend to complete 95% of her work and revision to avoid having to burn midnight oil during weekdays. She is definitely not a perfectionist, so she won’t spend additional hours to "polish" her work. From my understanding, she told me she has to spend so much time on her work is because the teachers will get them to do the assigned homework before they were taught in school, hence, she needs to do self-study before embarking on the homework. That’s explain why she needs to spend so much time completing her work.


With no tuition on hand, a lot of self-directed learning is required on her own… so far, she is happy with it.

As parents, we are just wondering why she has so much work to do and every weekends are occupied with nothing much, but her studies… sigh…

Actually, are students in other secondary schools as busy as our girls? When I see my girl works thru every weekends since school re-opens, so poor thing, no time to rest and relax…

RGS being an institution for the higher ability girls, the Teachers tend to encourage independent learning. So the school expects the girls to engage in self learning. But the Teachers do organise sup classes if required. My girl does not have any tuition this year, and probably due to HBL, she was able to “survive” the year 1 without much of an issue.

Actually, the students come from all over Singapore, so SK is no exception. We stay in CCK and some of my girl’s classmates stay in Jurong West too. So to us, distance is not much of a consideration if RGS is what your girl wants.
