Nanyang Primary
-
Hello everyone,
I would like to know why Nanyang Primary is such a popular school? There is no affiliation for the boys, and the affiliation to NYGH is not particularly good. Just wanted to know as my husband is an alumni, and we are in the midst of deciding which school to send our daughter to.
Nanyang undeniably produces top performing students. But it is no secret that the stress levels are off-the-charts as well! Am genuinely interested to know what makes this school stand out, and why?
Would appreciate any input, thank you! -

My kid is from NYPS and is taking the PSLE this month.Hello everyone,

This is just my personal opinion and the experience may differ for different groups of students within the school, so you may very well hear a contradicting viewpoint. I will not go into the debate on whether it is a good/ best school or whether it is the most suitable school for your child.
I do want to talk a bit about that stress level you referenced. My personal view is that it is largely self-induced. Many (most) students in the school have multiple tuition lessons throughout the week, leaving little time for sufficient rest. Additionally, because of the perception of being a \"good\" school, parents come in with very high expectations not just for the academic standards but also for the non-academic pursuits, eg. excelling in sports/ arts/ or other CCA's - potentially leading to higher stress levels.
My point is - if you can avoid succumbing to the peer pressure or subjecting your own child to unreasonably high expectations, the \"sky-high\" stress can be avoided. There will of course be some levels of pushing to perform well, but I feel that this is largely within your control. -
Thank you for your input. I agree wholeheartedly that it is up to the parents to determine the level of stress. I was from a so-called ‘elite’ school, but did miserably at my PSLEs and went to a less-than-desirable neighbourhood school.
As such, I am struggling to find a balance between adequately pushing my child, and letting her have her ‘childhood’ ! -

Yes, it's always a tough balance - even from your first paragraph where I gather that you would like your daughter to get to a \"better\" school and the second paragraph where you want her to have a \"childhood\".Thank you for your input. That balance is largely something within your control, regardless of which school is eventually selected. It's more of what you decide (as a family) how you want to move then adjust along the way.
Eg. if you go to a \"high-stress\" school and you feel like backing off, you can always not follow the crowd and reduce tuition. Alternatively, if you decided to to go another school and then feel it's too relaxed, you can always up the pressure to push your child further on your own.
There's really no perfect answer since we all have differing expectations/ values/ principles - just have to learn & adjust along the way to suit our own situation & the child's capabilities.
Just want to say though - the school is good in that there are lots of opportunities to grow and try things and many teachers are truly dedicated. On the other hand, there are many many top-performing students and like I said before, most are loaded with external extra-curricular activities. So if you feel obligated to follow the crowd, then yes, you may end up stressing your kid. Not saying that many non-NYPS parents dont load their kids too... so it may more be a factor of the type of parent/ expectations than it is the school. -
Thanks Zappy, you raise very fair points about how bringing up a child is a personal journey. My daughter has yet to start P1 and the worrying has begun. Hopefully I will be able to remain calm and look beyond grades when the real stress sets in.
I am pleased to hear about the opportunities to grow and try new things, do you have some examples of that?
All the best to your child with the PSLE this year! -

While I can't advise you on whether NYPS is going to be the best choice for your girl, I can help answer any specific questions you may have based on the last 6 years. If you think that may help, feel free to PM me.
Don't worry - I won't try to sway you either way

If you are not living within 1km, you will have no chance for PV in NYPS.Cloudy123:
Every year NYPS accepts 20 PVs, just right for the number of supposed vacancies. But there will be indefinite number of grassroots volunteers who may compete for spaces.
What kind of PVs do they choose? Any idea on the selection criteria? It seems from their PV application form that they're looking for traffic wardens, people to read stories and to help in photography / medical support. It seems like a large number of parents can fulfill at least 1 of those tasks? -
Hi hi, Any parents with your child entering P1 next year?
-
Hi parents,
Can any parents here provide me with more info on gep experience in nyps? Like how are the school hours, workload etc
Many thanks! -
How’s NYPS PSLE result this year?
Any updates?
