i never noticed that there will be a briefing this Friday. Anyway, i not going also. Please kindly share with us after the briefing.

        Thanks

Hi, just to update >>> my hubby went for the short briefing & it was nothing much....
becoz my ds will be taking the school bus fm home to school, so for ppl like us, no change..... there will still be a service to shuttle kids fm home to the new premises in TW.
only those currently walking to school will be more or less affected coz they wld then hv to assemble in the school before taking the \"shuttle bus\" to teck whye....

I attended the briefing, below some more info for your reference:

The shuttle bus pick up point will not be in the school 'cos the school compound will be closed. The school has not confirmed the pick up point yet, most probably will be at the HDB carpark near DLS side gate,if not, will be at Yew Tee CC. This is the only pick up point, will not stop at MRT station etc..

2-way trip :S$35 per month -normal school hours. After school hours due to CCA, enrichment class - S$45.

If you only want single trip - S$30 per month. Must also pay during school holidays. No ad hoc trip

In the first few weeks, school staff will be there at the pick up point to ensure everything goes well. Thereafter, no staff will be there. Thus, you need to make sure there is someone to wait for your kids after they alight from the bus.

For those who are currenting taking school bus, we need to talk to our bus operator.

No. of canteen stalls will remain. But staggered recess for students -3 groups: P1 & P2, P3 & P4, P5 & P6. We will be informed of the timing before school closes at year end.

The school will also let parents know the CCA timetable etc by year end.

Remedial classes & conversational chinese/malay classes only applicable to P3 & above.

P2 will have compulsory swimming class but for certain duration only , not throughout P2. It is not considered CCA for P2. Swimming lessons will be conducted after school hours. Bus will ferry them from school to swimming pool & back to school. I'm sure we will have to pay for it.

Only P3 & above are encouraged to take part in CCA. CCA in Primary school is not compulsory.

Current CCA at Yew Tee CC will no longer be held there, it will either be at the \"new' school or near it.

I received a notification regarding the Math topical test yesterday, just take note if you did not see any notification from your child.

              Hi Anna

Yes, I saw the notification too. Next week will be the maths test and marks will be counted as part of year end results.

Oh yes, the recess for next year will be 30 minutes instead of the current 20 minutes.

              warm regards

Hi all parents with kids in DLS,

I am registering my girl for P1 this year. Would appreciate if the parents here can share with me more about DLS. I would like to know what are the activities / facilities available in school. From what i read in the website, it seems that DLS has got fewer CCA compared to many other primary school nearby.

Does the school (or the temporary school) has the following activities or facilities ?
                  - computer class / club
                  - science class / club
                  - arts club
                  - dance and music
                  - choir
                  -badminton
                  - swimming
                  - others?
                  - have you all seen the new temporary school in TW?
                  - what do you like or dislike about DLS?
                  Thanks in advance

                    Dear Healthyfatso:

Basically i am not sure how to answer your questions. However i got no regret to register my son with DLS (he is in P1) now. Fewer CCA do not mean not good as i don think our child can attend all the CCA.
Furthermore with the new premises in 2 years time, i believe there will have better facilities and learning environment.

My girl in P1 now, she enjoys going to DLS.

How can the standard drop when the school's expectations from the kids are high?

If the kids are are not so academically inclined, DLS's standard may be too high.

Especially the Maths, I felt some of the questions can be quite challenging for P1 standard - needs critical thinking skills, not so straight forward for their level. Many problem solving questions.

I shared with my friends who kids are in other school in cck, she said those types of questions only tested in P2 2nd semester. My friends' kids in school in Woodlands also don't do such challenging questions. My niece in P2 at a school in Yishun also don't get such challenging questions.

Level of English must be good in order to understand those Maths questions. It's a testing of thinking skill & English. I was quite shocked the first time I saw such questions. Now, I'm getting use to it.

                        Sample question:
John is 3 years younger than his sister.
His sister will be 15 years old in 6 years time.
                        How old is John now?

                        star + circle + moon= 19
                        circle + moon =12
                        star = circle
                        What is moon?

Of course not all the questions are challenging, there will always be a few such questions to stretch them further. Think positively, it is good for them.

The school also expects a lot from them in English. Now in Stellar programme, no English textbook, using Big Book programme. Learn English through Story. It's fun during lessons but not so \"fun\" when it's exam.
They are expected to write 60 words for Picture Composition in SA1. Many schools don't have such requirements in SA1, in fact, some do away with SA1.

For English & MT, P1 students are expected to do project work & there's also \"Show & Tell\". \"Show & Tell\" is challenging for my girl 'cos she is very shy & lack of confident in public speaking.

For MT, they will start streaming at the beginning of the year. After SA1, they will stream again based on their results. The school will do a survey first to understand more about our kids and their level of language.

What's good about the school is that they will conduct briefing/dialogue session, parents/teacher meeting but need to take leave...

Then, they have e-learning day, kids don't have to go to school and we have to take leave again to help them with their e-learning lessons.

It's a learning process for me as I don't know about these expectations from the school previously. BTW, they need to practise typing skills on-line but not to worry, only occasionally.

Though DLS doesn't seem to produce Top PSLE students but the standard is definitely not low. The standard is higher than national average.

The Lasallian leaders (prefects) are well-mannered, also many helpful parent volunteers are around during events, parents/teaching meeting. They are there to lead us to the venue.

Basically I felt it is a good school but must have luck to get in if you are not a catholic 'cos they don't accept PV.

Good luck to those who want to register.
