Playing is good if it can get the kids engaged in reading. As long as the kid is engaged, he/she will learn well.

A friend of mine has a little girl who can read long chapter books like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Phantom Tollbooth by the time she was in Primary 1. I think understanding grammar and comprehension is just a matter of explaining what they are to a child who is already a proficient reader for her age.

The girl came from a very play-based environment and her mummy plays with her a lot and hardly ever used assessment books. They write silly stories together and play a lot of verbal games.

seems like the Teacher conference doesn't seems to help ! so why hold a TC when they are unable to give info ?

felt weird when they change P3 EL my Pals to HM. Is MBS going down slope?

Actually the same for other schools, they will eventually roll out to Stellar for the P3s and 4s. Just that MBS is using HM textbook instead of the Stellar books.

        hth

In addition to HM, this year they also roll out the grammar book for P3. So at least there are more focus in that area.

Hi, care to share why HM is not as good as my pals?

Imagine :? ...... paying 10 times higher price for a thick book, compare to the my pals, which we had not seen before. Until the end of the term, after the kids had done some part of the book, then the teachers will return part of the worksheet to us. AT the end of the year, when everything were return to us, i think not more than 70 % were done.
Then for each theme worksheet, Not every pages are done, meaning they will skip pages.

when the worksheets came back, (P2)
            One of the exercise :
Two Letter - One sound. Each spelling word is spelled with th, wh, sh or ch.
            Kids were told to put
            when , which Under Whale
chase, which, teach, catch under chair
both, then, teeth, than under thumb
SOUNDING ARE THAUGHT DURING THE KINDER, and somehow, kids are to learn this agin when they in P2.

            Another exercise.
KNowing your ABC's under P2 Theme 3: Neighborhood & Comm

Read the words in each box. Write the five words in ABC order.

            most morning move mother month

            ??????????????????????????????????????????????

There are many parts of exercise that want kids to learn the sounds, vowel pair, I heard from a kid mum that . . . During lesson, the teacher also not so sure about the answer & have to keep looking at the answer ( teacher's Note).

Eg : Now write each word under the train that has the same vowel pair

            Pail : train waited paid
            may : spray stay day

ARE THEY TRYING TO TRAIN KIDS TO GO PSLE WITH PROFESSIONAL LISTENING & SPECIAL POWDER OF PARING THE SOUNDS????????????????

I realise that my DS taking (p1 & P2 HM) had drop in her grammer & comprehension , and voccab. cos she cant do well in other school exam paper.

P1 & P2 MBS english paper are quite simple & weird compare to other school.
Given a passage... Telling U that a Bear who is a doctor, treat a few paitients. then reading a newspaper.... etc ( cant really remember)...

Then kids were ask to list out the FACT & MAKE BELIEVE.
            EG ...
            1) THE BEAR IS A DOCTOR.
SO IS IT A FACT OR MAKE BELIEVE??? OF COS IT'S A MAKE BELIEVE
            2) Bear reading a newspaper.
I cant remember excatly but parents want to know more, may ask the teachers for 2009 (P2 mid year paper)

Kids in MBS (P1 & P2 using the HM) were trained like this. then now..... P3 (2011 they still insist to use the HM) I think i got to buy more asses book & send my boy to more tution.

My point is...... for a P1 & P2, i felt that its very misleading to a kids. It's very Different compared to other school.
p.s ARE PSLE suppose to know this???

I wonder if any parents have raised the issue about using HM to the subject teacher, level manager or even the principal and why HM is preferred to My Pals?

If they continue to teach the kids basic things like what they have learnt in the kinder, then it will be very tough for them when it comes to PSLE.

Is that why the student portfolio required parents to update also whether my kid is having any enrichment or tuition outside the school and is it a one to one or group. I think must sound it out ‘loud’ during the next one to one session in Mar. Anyone know when is MBS going to change the Principal?

Do u think jus a few parents sounding out loud will be enough??? Really need lots of parents writing to MOE , feedbacks etc. I did call up & ask the teachers but they say o it's the school! Actually fault reAlly dun lies on the teacher n level manager! It's the one who advise to use Hm. I guess most of u would have read the \"newsletter\" given up! They( MBS ) claim that HM is better according to dun know what research! But looking at the work load, a very thick book, poor quality paper, pupils are impossible to do every pages and so expensive HM! Do you ( MBS parents ) think that it will really help??? MBS parents out there whom seen the worksheet, any other advice??? Oh ya MBS students won't have the chance to do past year papers for English . It seems like they are changing topics every year! The weirdest thing is to test kid what is make believe and fact in exam??? Oh gosh !!! I really can't imagine whAt is the outcome! Do we as parents need to find tutor? Haha updating do kids have tution? :?

                    Hi all

As far as I’m concerned, HM is a lousy text, not focussed so to speak! I don’t think subject teacher has a say in what books to use each year, it boils down to the Management just like any organisation. Think we should take this up with the Management of MBS and they are even thinking of rolling to P3 next year or already rolled. (I’m not too sure)

Is sheer rubbish that it is a new method/way of teaching English!

I am not against using HM first of all. But then the way teacher teaches the student is it using the method of what US’s teacher is teaching. As a parent I really don’t know. I have to coach my son by buying more enrichment and assessment books to guide him since he has not started any tuition yet. I have doubt on the way how the teaching and learning method goes. Can anyone share or is there someone who knows more could share with us. Is there someone who has attended any briefing on the ‘HM’ when they started it?

Grammar will always be grammar. As long as the child knows it well enough, s/he can do any exam paper. The only difference, which I noticed about MBS papers is that they tend to test more on the technical aspect of grammar. E.g. Underline the verbs. This is going back to the good ole days before Stellar. You may have read somewhere that some parents do complain that their kids' grammar foundation isn't strong under the Stellar program.

Comparing the HM books and Stellar books, I will say they are both equally easy for most local children. How well a school can deliver depends on its supplementary worksheets. I must agree that MBS is really lacking in that area. Writing was not done in a scaffolding manner with each theme. I need to look at the whole P3 requirements before I can decide if it is a huge jump from P2 to 3.
