I was just going to let him pick one out from Kiddie Palace at JP. They have a pretty good selection there. You could also check John Little at JP-- they may have bags.

About bags, will just share my ds' experience in P1 so you might have an idea what kind would be suitable.
Trolley or backpack?
Some P1 classes are on the ground floor. Others are on the 2nd floor. My son's was on the 2nd floor. Thankfully we got him a backpack kind. If he had a trolley bag, it'd be troublesome lugging that extra weight around and not being able to fully utilise its trolley function (cos they have to go up and downstairs frequently).
Cost?
When I was selecting bags, I had the idea that neighbourhood shops would be cheaper. Or that no-brands would be cheaper than branded ones.
I was surprised to find that the difference was not much, or not there.
For example, the ergo bags at Popular were selling for around S$60-80. I had heard that the kids would have very heavy bags and my ds is a small-sized fella, so I wanted a bag that was somewht ergonomic so his spine/ back would not be injured by carrying a heavy bag for long periods of time.
However, a lot of the ergo bags had astronomical price tags.
In the end, I got a Deuter bag from the Travel Store in JP. They were having a Xmas or yr-end sale, I remember. It was very close to start of school then, so I was really going all out looking for bags. Found one that cost around $50 that had a firm back (quite ergo in design), good straps, a waist buckle strap as well that also looked very good, very boyish and rugged.
My ds loved it, and we were glad it was cheaper than usual ergo bags but had the same functions.
Size?
Make sure the size is adequate. It should hold a good number of books cos besides textbooks and workbooks, my ds also brings story books to read, and his tr wants them to bring a file everyday too. That file is a transparent button file that is very useful for all the parents' letters, worksheets and homework.
It's especially good for my ds cos he would otherwise stuff all the parents letters into the bag, crumpling them. Also, he is very lazy and bad at writing the day's HW into his student handbook (which the kids are supposed to do) so he resorted to putting whatever book or worksheet that was the day's HW into that file, so when he gets home, he remembers to do them (just take that file out, and pass whatever letter or form to mommy, and then settle the rest of the HW himself).
That file is about A4 or slighly larger than A4 size. Cos it is definitely larger than the Maths Workbook, which is A4, I think.
If your child's bag is too small, then he'd need to hold the file or carry another bag to hold the file, which would not free his hands.
Not sure abt other kids, but my ds would easily lose something that he holds in his hands. Why? Cos he'd stop or be easily distracted by friends or stuff, so he'll put what he has in his hands down somewhere, either to talk to someone, play with someone or tie a shoelace. Then he'd actually forget to take that same thing and can continue on his way, leaving that behind!
So I prefer him to have everything in his one school backpack.
Durability?
Finally, it should at least last a year. This Deuter one held up despite all the abuse. I have another one I bought that he uses to bring for swimming, zoo outings or piano class. It has a Pokemon design on it.
The zip area's fraying already. It does not have a waist buckle too. Not so durable.
Ease to clean?
Not sure if this is impt to you.
My son's bag gets really dirty easily. I really wonder if he drags it around on the canteen floor and in the school field or what. But it even got his classmate's vomit on it, cos his partner who queues beside him during flag raising was feeling sick and puked all over his bag (cos they put their bags beside them, and his friend turned to his side to puke).
I poured Dettol all over his bag when he came home cos it smelt so bad! He went around the whole day in school without cleaning the puke off, can you believe boys???
Then I poured Dynamo on it too, soaked then brushed the whole bag pretty hard. Thankfully everything came off. The bag's colour did not run.
I don't need to buy him a new bag this yr for sure, since he can use it again next yr! Happy for this. So I'll buy this same one for ds2 when it's his turn to go P1!

Want to bring up an event..
My son brought home this flier from school.
It's about the Mid Autumn Festival.
The school is celebrating it on 17 Sept, from 6pm to 8.30pm. It is a Friday.
It is open to guests as well, and it's like a carnival where you can buy games stall coupons. $1 for 4 coupons I think.
And you can buy food coupons too. Some of the food stalls include Bubble tea, nachos, hotdogs...
My family is planning to go, bring the younger boy too, since most probably he'll be studying there in future. Maybe even ask grandparents along...
If you purchase a kit, then it also includes NEWater, a lantern with candles etc etc... For guests, it costs $3 (inclusive of food and games coupons). For students, $2.
Asking champion etc, who are going?
For the students to be in P1 next year, if you want your child to have some fun in their future school and familiarise themselves, it's a good opportunity to come too!
My girl will be entering p1 in this sch next year. glad to hear that they have this event!
Must i bring any document to 'show' she will be the future student or i just walk in and buy the ticket from the school?

Ahhh, back after a while. Been absent from the forum cos my kids caught a cold one after another. Ugh, tis that season again.
Anyway, would like to update other parents about the report book. Cos this is new to me. Last time, our time, we had rows and rows of marks for many subjects in the report book, and class position, percentages etc. So this new system is refreshing for me, and to prepare the new P1 2011 parents, I thought I'd post about it.
During both PTMs in the year, the teachers will show me my son's marks for listening compre, oral, and other small tests/ quizzes in class. Spelling/ tingxie too. The Mt tr also showed me his final overall percentage for Chinese during the last PTM.
I thought these would be in the report book too, but on the last day of school when ds1 brought his report book home, I was surprised to see just grades.
There are 6 subjects there: PE, Social Studies, Health Ed, Civics and Moral Ed, Music and Art.
And for each of these, ds1 is given a grade. So it's just A or B etc.
After these grades, they have the normal attendance record, tr's remarks, and the weight for NAFPTA. I was also surprised that my son has acceptable weight, haha, we all thought he's scrawny.
It's refreshing for us not to have ranking or marks. Sometimes we do wonder how he is doing with reference to his peers. But then with the new system without exams, we have to trust what the tr says. When they say he's fine and doing alright, we just have to believe them I think.
I do think, is he playing too much, having too relaxed a time compared to my other friends' kids with exams?? cos my relatives and friends with stats will feel, oh their kid needs more coaching cos they're lagging behind in certain subject and/ or need to buck up cos must squeeze into the best class...
Discussed with hubby and finally we think, we'll just relax and let him enjoy himself. It's the hols now! No exams next yr too. He'll have plenty of such exams for the other 10 yrs of his schooling life, so not to worry that he won't get used to them.
Most importantly, he enjoyed his 1st yr so much and enjoys studying and going to school immensely. Let's hope for great trs for him next yr and that he'll continue to have so much fun! -

Just read from the PSLE result forum that Corporation Primary School the highest PSLE score is 267! Congratulation to CPS! :celebrate: The national standard highest is 282 from Rosyth Primary School.
Just a bit side track - A friend's child is with West Grove and the highest score is 268 so CPS \"lost\" to West grove by a mere 1 mark only :lol: -

With a top score of 267, what about the rest of the cohort? How many score above 250?
My boy will be registering for P1 next year, am currently monitoring the progress of the JW/JE schools, CPS is one of my shortlisted school. Interested partly they have the PAL programme.
To be honest, of course, we hope to be balloted into Rulang, but chances are slim, hence need to look around of back-up schools.
Appreciate any comments parents from CPS. Thanks.
