      ExpatMom:

I've heard a similar study (can't remember the source either) that found that the order of development tends to be different between boys and girls. Boys develop physically first and mentally later. Girls go the other way around, and then the both catch up to each other around puberty.

But I have also read that, in the past, boys got called on more than girls, leading to boys doing better in school than girls. Today that awareness has turned the tables and now there are newer studies that show girls are actually doing better than boys in the later years too.

I really should dig up those articles... of course those statistics probably vary due to cultural differences too.
Possibly, cultural differences would matter too, that makes sense.

        Hello All CPS parents,

Would like to hear your view regarding this Stellar Programme for your kids EL lesson. Though my gal is already in P3 but I am still a blur blur mummy trying to figure out this whole new approach to EL :stupid:

        STELLAR

        Objectives

The vision for STELLAR is to cultivate in children a love for reading and, to provide them with a strong foundation in the English Language.

        Description

The STELLAR Pedagogic Framework from Primary 1 to Primary 3 (Semester 1) is made up of three major teaching strategies:

        1. SBA – Shared Book Approach
        2. MLEA – Modified Learning Experience Approach
        3. LC – Learning Centres

        SBA
The teacher introduces and shares a Big Book with the pupils. The teacher teaches language items, structures and skills explicitly, including concepts of print, phonics and grammar.

        MLEA
This is a shared experience that is linked to the Big Book which has been read during Shared Reading. Based on their experiences, the pupils come up with a piece of class writing. This becomes the basic for group writing, where the children work in small groups. This is followed by the individual writing.

I copy the above from the school webpage of Marsiling primary school. Find that this really gives an overall view of what is being taught and learnt in school. But pardon me - does CPS has such a webpage or letter telling us what our children are learning in class?

LKVM, as your kid is in P1 - can you share with us what he learnt in class for Stellar Program? My DD2 will be in P1 next year so I think I want to prepare her for it as she belongs to those \"No Worry; Be happy\" type 😉

Kabalevsky, how about yours? For P2s, how are their lesson structure like?

EL is the core subject and language that links to the understanding of many other subjects. I find that without an overall view of what they are taught and be learning in class, it leaves us parents clueless on how to guide them at home. Yes, there may be many assessment books out there but ultimately we still have to follow closely to what is being taught in school.

I chance upon another school which shows the outline of their P3 EL programme for the year. Just to share with you all

          Hi champion,

I didn't receive info for Stellar in P2 but in the Orientation for P1, they gave us a handout in the folder which had a section on Stellar. I checked and it said basically the same thing you copied from the other pr sch website.

I also casually asked my sis abt it since she taught in Pr sch for several yrs last time. She said Stellar is like learning English through stories.

Last time our time we learnt through chapters in the textbook that were quite unrelated. Short passages and so on and we were taught grammar separately. Now they try to link up all the learning in the stories the kids read.

Something like that, according to my sis.

I do notice that it is nice that my son's spelling comes in a passage with the words underlined. I feel that is more meaningful than a list of 10 words which the kids have no context. In a passage, besides learning the spelling of the words, they know the meaning and how to use the word too.

In P3, does your dd have more sentences? Cos ds1 start to have 2-3 sentences per spelling now. At the end right? The rest of the words are underlined singularly throughout the passage. Same for your dd last yr?

How abt Chinese tingxie? More sentences too? Any moxie? Now ds1 has about 2-3 sentences in Chinese too.

Are the 2nd ones all happy go lucky? Cos my ds2 is like that too. He yearns to go to Pr sch like big brother but then he doesn't have any inclination that it means homework, haha. Now he is so carefree and he takes it for granted. 🙂

forgot to mention how ds1’s lesson is… oh dear, so absent minded.

yup you asked how his lesson is like?

i asked him and he says they will read a story from the big book. i think they just did "Bad Dreams" then they will do some group writing/ sharing… drawing in the MLEA book… some activities all based on that story…

not in this order. you know lah, how my ds1 relates things to me in school are all in patches. not in sequence.

did you need more specifics? I can ask him more…

Hi Thanks so much for your updates; appreciates :thankyou:

Yes, my DD1 also has this MLEA book last year but this year they are into Creative writing. But DD2 in PCF Kidergarten is starting to have MLEA Exercise Book too  . She started off with writing title on \"Leader\" - and that is our Singapore President! Then 2nd topic something about the field trip they went to Singapore Flyer, Merlion, Art Museum etc...Quite interesting and DD1 was telling DD2, \"You know what does MLEA stand for? Let me tell you....\" And she went on to dictate for DD2 but DD2 attitude was like,\" Huh? What's that? Never mind lah; Teacher asked me to write so I write lor and hand up to her!\" Aiyoh, she sure to be \"a pain in the necek\" when she enters into P1 class next year

well, at least you have a good asst tr in dd1 cos she can help you coach the younger one 🙂

talking abt k2 having MLEA, wow, nowadays kindy trs are very well-informed about P1 and general Pr sch practices! they prepare kids v well for P1 indeed. some kids don't even find anything new to learn in P1 cos their kindy seemed to have prepared them for everything!

                so different from our time.

this friday holiday for P1s and P2s right, btw? P3s also?
