Can check for P3/P4, all be taking higher chinese? Or only the top few classes?

Heard from my friend that only the Top 3 classes will take higher chinese.

Ur friend is right but parents hv the option to opt out.

Then can check if my boy is not in the Top 3 classes, does he has a chance to take higher chinese? Coz his chinese is better than his english.. :scratchhead:
unfortunately , not.
he will have a chance in P5 even he is not in the top 3 classes.
generally every students have to do well in all 4 subjects before they can be consider to take HCL in P5. Just good in Chinese is not enough.

School will recommend P4 students with good overall performance including Chinese to take higher Chinese when they go to P5. However, parents can still opt for higher Chinese even the school did not recommend their kids to take it. Those who take higher Chinese also need to sit for the normal Chinese

However, school will advice those below average performers (including those who passed higher chinese) to drop their higher Chinese in P6 & focus on the other subjects. PSLE higher Chinese points (max 3 points) can only be used to apply for SAP schools. They need to get reasonably good T score (above 230) in order to be qualified for SAP schools. Therefore it only make sense to offer higher Chinese to only top 2 classes in P5 & P6.

Oh..but if the student did not take HCL for 2 years and jump to HCL in P5, he/she will also have a tougher time to catch up his/her HCL in P5.

Just thinking of letting him have more exposure to Chinese Language since he is better in that. Too bad, the school is still very exam based... as in taking HCL just for the purpose of entering into SAP school.

The jump would b smaller than taking HCL only from sec 1?

Anyway, the textbook is the same, just more focus on identifying the wrong word/phrase n correcting it. No mcq to help like socan always self-study if not selected. Compre is tougher as it's analytical but ds finds compo easier than pix compo. Usually they just had to include e given sentence in e compo.

Ds' class only 7 not selected but can still join if others opted out. So I guess it's quite mass mkt? ; p

Anyway, it's quite affordable n on a weekday, so we encouraged him to join since he has the interest.
Not sure abt selection afterwards but ds told me ytd that they were allocated to training classes depending on last Sa2's maths results.
Did ncps send any team in previous yrs? Any outcome?

Previous years kids only started Math Olympiad in P4. Selection was base on P3 SA1 & SA2 results (above 90%) & recommendation by Math teachers. Those selected students will continue all the way to P6. There will be Math Olympiad competition for P5 to P6. Nan Chiau is not strong in Math Olympiad. Rosyth, Henry Park, Nanyang Pri, Catholic High & Tao Nan were in the top positions.

Math Olympiad syllabus is very different from PSLE syllabus. Some kids drop Math Olympiad when they go to P5 or P6 to focus on the PSLE syllabus. Not all kids can maintain their good grade when they go to P5.
