Does anyone have any thoughts after receiving the Letter to Parents yesterday?

I was quite stunt to see that YZ implemented the Homework guidelines, ie. No certain homework on certain day. I thought it is inflexible and redundant. Teachers may be restricted by this which stop them from giving HW on certain day and instead pressurized to give more on certain days. Indeed, my child came back home also didn’t feel comfortable. In fact, the children themselves already talked among themselves that they didn’t like it. So, yet to see how it will turn out.

Every year the letter also said the new school shoes is a phase-in. However, at school, it was communicated to children that the new shoes and sorts is a MUST at ALL levels. I think YZ really needs to improve its communication within the school itself as well as to parents.

Does any parent here have any problem with the Maths Process Skills workbook that the students are using?

Here is what happened to DD:

Her teacher asked the (P3) class to do some pages in the workbooks. She came back to tell us. Over the weekend, we had a lot of things to deal with and so could only guide her on doing it from about 9 pm on Sunday night.

The questions were very challenging and new to her, and it took a lot of coaching, frustration and scolding to get her to understand the questions. And even then, it was a case it was about 10.45 pm and really too late, and so DW gave her a lot more hints and just finished it and asked her to go to bed.

Next day (Monday), her teacher said that it was not the correct book and ask her to get the correct one. DD came back home to tell DW, who after work went down to the bookshop to ask.

It ended up the workbook does not specify which level it’s for on the cover. And every level has the same words ‘Mathe Process Skills Workbook…’ So the bookshop actually packed the wrong level’s workbook for us when we bought the books there. And poor DD had to do P4 questions that were way beyond her, and DW had to scold her a lot for not being able to do the questions and it was getting v late…

The bookshop initially even refused to change the book, but DW gave them a piece of her mind, and they relented.

Thinking through, I’m wondering how did the publisher of the workbook managed to make such a mistake. How on earth do they expect anyone to know which book is for which level if it’s not indicated on the book itself?? And how did the school end up deciding to use such a book that could result in such ‘accident’? If the book is really that good, then something should be done to correct this before it could be used…

Not sure did I hear it correctly - The mean score for last yearPSLE is 211. Principal said the school overall result has improved . Above national level. But it didn’t show the details of the individual subject. I’ m more interested of how many A & A* the sch produced. At least can see how the whole cohort performed in each subject. Will the school be providing the details on its website?

I wish that the school can help to reduce the weight of school bags. Everytime when school had any celebration or event, my child still had to carry the same amount of books to school. I thought school could let the students know at which period the event will be held, thus the students need not bring the books.

The introduction of the A4 size ring file also added to the load of the school bag. I was told now students have to keep the WHOLE year’s work in the file, thus, the thicker ring file is needded. It used to be the thin clip file which keeps school work by term. In fact I don’t understand why school has to keep checking the file and making students bringing the file to school often. Teachers have more important things to do rather than checking the file. School can still tabulate the list of works done, but please leave the responsibility of filing to students and parents themselves.

                  Thanks.

Few month ago, the school changed the back shoes due to the feedback that the old shoes will cracked after a few wear.

laterly, l have problem with the new black shoes is that it smell badly after wearing it whole day. i tried washing it, put charcoal and spray disinfectant. :?: nothing work.
i have no problem with the old shoes.
sigh... can we get shoes outside as long as it is black. 🤷

I think you can’t if your child is from P3 and below.

I heard parents from P3 saying that the school ran out of the size that they wanted, so, they were caught in between.

Anyway, though the shoes was from FILA, the quality was very lousy. The base was in fact made of cardboard. So, only after a few months, the shoes was unwearable. When I sounded this to the shoes, the staff told me not to wash the shoes, which I didn’t. However, the kids still have to wear shoes to school when it rained.

Shoes bought from the neighbourhood shophouses are cheaper and more lasting. So school should look into this problem seriously.

Perhaps the school could consider personalising the shoes by having shoe laces with the ‘Yangzhengnite’ wordings or other embellishments on suitable black shoes, rather than insisting that pupils must buy the shoes from the vendor who is unable to provide products of suitable quality.

Forging a unified identity can be done through various means other than just shoes. Maybe the admin is concerned that students will come in with various different models and makes of shoes, but it’s rather difficult to depart too much if the requirement is ‘fully black leather-like shoes’. That way parents have a choice as to the price and quality we desire or can afford.

Personally, we had less problems with the latest batch of shoes we bought after the new shoes came out last August. It’s softer and DD had less complaints after switching to this.
