    • RE: 2013 Sec 1 Discussions

For mine, majority will take E and A Maths.

      Mine is still thinking…

EL, Chinese, E Math, A Math + the following:

Option 1: triple science + History Elective
Option 2: triple science + Geo Elective
Option 3: Physics + Chemistry + Pure History + Geo Elective.

May I know if the above options is very luggi or not, in view of Option 1 and 2 is sort of "duplicating" and different only in the humanity elective?

Or should we go for something that is very different in each option?

Option 1: triple science + History Elective
Option 2: Physics + Chemistry + Pure History + Geo Elective
      Option 3: Combine science + ???

My child also would like to go for triple science, which is not a combination encouraged by the school.

I do not understanding why L1R5 is so restricted to force students to be \"balanced\". I do not see any problem in focusing in sciences or humanities. Aren't deep skill encouraged? Or did I miss any important message behind?

It's a typical of MOE - swinging back and forth depending on the 'wind'. At the moment, 'broad-based' and 'multidisciplinary' is all the rage, so everyone has to go that way. Before my time, students could do triple science at O levels. Then in the 1970s (when I was in sec school), we also weren't allowed to do triple science for O levels - we did a combined Physics/Chem and Bio, so we could take 2 humanities (for a 8-subject combination). But students who did this were allowed to take 3 sciences at A level as there was no 'contrasting subject' requirement at A levels then. Things changed, then changed again. In my time, students who wanted to do 'weird' combinations (with what is now known as a contrasting subject other than Econs) at A level had to beg! I really don't see why MOE just can't let students choose.

That's my point too that why MOE can't just let the students choose? I believe that school does not encourage triple science is because then the child MUST do well in that ONLY humanity subject. Why such restriction? What's wrong with choosing all the humanities or all the sciences? In the announcement of ASPIRE and National Day rally, isn't deep skills emphasized? :?

For our case, interest is not equal to result.

My son wanted to do triple science which is based on his interest However, looking at his result, he should do 2 sci and 2 humanities. And looking at the humanities subject result, he should do lit, but he wanted to do history.

His english is not very strong, but he did better in History compared to Geo.

      Headache!

    • RE: 2014 Sec 2 Discussions

My child commented that it’s quite difficult to make a decision to choose as he heard from the upper sec that the lower sec topics on Sci and the humanities are quite different. Thus, even if you do well on the lower sec it may not mean you will do well in upper sec.

He is having a hard time to decide whether to do triple science or to do 2 humanities. If based on interest, he would choose triple science. But based on result, it could be the 2 humanities.

Comparing Geo and Lit, which one is easier?

    • RE: CIP Hour

I didn’t know that the requirement for CIP hour implementation is school-specific. Mine only clocked 10 hours so far 😞

    • RE: CIP Hour

May I know how to get the CIP hour? How to make sure school recognized it if it’s done outside the school?

Is there any relationship between the CIP hour and the CCA?

How does CIP help towards calculation of L1R5?

Heard that CIP points would need to be completed by end Sec 3. Is that true?

      Thanks.

I also want to know about the CCA bonus points. Also, can the community service 100 hrs be obtained from joining the uniform group.

Again, thanks for all the useful advice, and TIA!

      thanks all for the advice.

For humanity, should the better ones be an elective or should it be taken under the combined Social Study.

For example, in this case, HIST A1, GEO A2, which option is better?

      1) SS + HIST and GEO or
      2) SS + GEO and HIST

Sorry, very blur… what’s H2 and H1? What’s required to get into Uni? Thinking too far…

    • RE: What is L1R5?

Problem is, those subjects did better are not quite interested (Humanity subjects). Those didn’t do well are interested. Even for Sci, even though it’s A2, it’s below average. So, not sure can be successful in selecting 3 sciences.

Yes, need to study more in Math especially that Additional Math is mandatory. Is Additional Math tougher?

Please advise if there is any tips in Math / Eng.

      Thank you very much.
