          Hi

My child is from MSH primary. He came home recently from school with a broken front tooth.
He was hit by a badminton racket by another boy.
Very upset as the school just gave me a phone call suggesting is my child’s fault and does not provide much information on the investigation or what they have done to improve safety in the school in future.
My child has to live with this dental problem in life.
Hope to obtain some helpful suggestions from other parents here. Thanks.

Sorry to hear that. IMO, true accidents are usually hard to prevent. Do you not trust the teachers for some reasons? What did your son say?

Accidents are preventable, perhaps this type of injury is considered minor to you.

Sorry, i don't mean that. It's not minor.

Gosh, that looks like an adult tooth. It may be possible to create a false cap for that tooth, I’m not too sure, please ask a dentist.

But I think the more important concern you have now is how to resolve it with the school and other party right? I hope u can find a way to get the school to organize a mediation meeting or sthg. So that all parties can sit down and hash out what happened, what reasonable compensation/disciplinary or other measures to be taken etc.

                    Thanks for your feedback.

I hope to see the scene and understand how the incident happened. So like what you suggested, I emailed the school to request to meet with them. But the school had ignored my emails. Instead They ask form teacher to call me and my Wife to settle the matter without meeting. The whole thing is my son fault. He choose to play near others who is playing Badminton.

The way this school choose to handle such situation with parents is not setting a good example for the boy who had the racket, the victim, the parents from both sides and other students. No proper closure, sounded more like covering up of lack of safety measures. Both my son and I think this school is hopeless at these things. They did give us a form for us to try to claim medical expenses. Guess we have to learn to accept and move on.

I do not know what the S.O.P. is at primary schools. But I do know that the S.O.P. at my son’s preschool (& children’s church) is that when an incident involving injury occurs, the teacher needs to call both sides’ parents separately to inform them what happened, and what measures were taken (eg made the offender apologize, first aid applied, etc). The other party is not named. But sometimes the kids themselves tell the parents who’s the other party. One time the other parent Whatsapped me to apologize and even offered to buy anti-scarring cream as compensation. No broken bones or teeth.

Your incident is more serious. I dunno what happens if and when one party chooses not to accept the teacher’s explanation/solution. So I can’t help u there. Maybe u need to escalate to higher management. Have u tried contacting the other party’s parent via PM in the class chat group?

Certainly revisiting the place of incident and understanding what happened will help u establish how you plan to deal with this accident.
