Hi fantasylanddreams, we used to have compulsory academic support in Eng and Math from P3 but it was scraped this year when new p was on board. Now, there is no more extra support from school, not even in P6. Schoolwork is also kept to a bare minimum. My girls had a lot of free time throughout this whole year. I tried to keep them occupied by signing them up for tuition classes otherwise they would be spending their time on class chat and games!

Neighbourhood schools are always quick to adopt changes that you hardly see in those TOP, popular schools. We are always the guinea pigs!

        Hi

Can someone shed a little light on the school’s culture, ie. homework load, standards of Mandarin, the teachers’ care for the students and if the school is very results-driven etc. Any thoughts, however trivial, are greatly appreciated! Thank you!!

Eunice, we are thinking about the same thing. I also remember what Mdm Ler said and thought it was strange that less than 50% of our current P4 will be taking HCL next year. It is supposed to be a stronger cohort. Given that we are also a SAP school, I thought more students should be taking HCL but again, I know new p is not really supportive of this HCL. I heard in P5/P6 level briefing, he was trying hard to sell the idea that HCL is not important, explaining to parents how the additional points [quote]

I attended the lower pri talk too. He also keep elaborating on the HCL and drop obvious hints that HCL will only benefit those who are going to the top sec (which in my opinion is not wrong). He mentioned that students should focus on the core subjects rather than fuss on HCL. Which make sense too... but than again, as a chinese sch with rich Chinese history, he should be encouraging students to excel in Chinese and give a more motivational speech rather than discouraging them to choose HCL. Especially the talk I went is meant for lower Primary. MY kid hear already super happy.. zzz
He kept emphasizing we should not label a child and every child’s should be given a chance hence, the reason why he is not going to stream the class. But seems like he is not taking the chance where it comes to HCL. He also said something along the line like ...parents got to work with him and trust him with his experience in education...

I thought take HCL means the children will be more exposed to the cultural aspect of the language. If kids can cope the stretch their potential but why must discourage?

Yes, all students take HCL starting from P1. At end of P4, students will be offered HCL in P5 if they qualify. If not, they will take standard chinese.

In the past, regardless if you are taking HCL or CL in P5/P6, all students continue to use HCL textbooks, taught HCL. (Preferred)

From this year P5, only those taking HCL are taught HCL and use HCL books. The rest all downgraded to CL.

Beginning of the year, p shared 2017 PSLE results. Impressive!

Highest score: 285 (that very smart indian boy who is effectively bilingual)
More than 50 students scored more than 260.
More than 70 students scored more than 250. (DD1 is not sure if these 70++ include the 50++ students above 260)

Anyway, we all know this is the work from previous p. All eyes now on this year p6. With all the drastic changes, we shall see.

The kids will not get any extra points by taking HCL. If they take HCL, their HCL AL score will be rank on par with others taking CL.

Eventually, those kids taking HCL and achieving AL 2 will be slaughtered by others taking CL and achieving AL 1. There will be many disappointed children and even more angry parents.

imho, these changes were put in place as a result of the changes in PSLE grading, and MOE deemphasizing of HCL.

For me personally, I will try to expose my kid to HCL for as long as possible. However, I may eventually pull the plug on HCL PSLE, even if my kid is deem ready by the school.

In today P5/P6 level briefing, I am able to understand why HCL is not that important. If student A scores 253, student B scores 250+3 and both choose the same secondary school, student A gets the priority. Tscore is always the key determining factor. HCL points of +1, +2 or +3 only comes into play if the last vacancy is taking tscore of 250, then the +3 will be at an advantage. Otherwise, points are useless.

Many parents are impressed with last year PSLE results, snapping photos of the slides. According to p, this year P6 cohort is even stronger than their last year seniors, base on P5 performance. They are expected to produce even better results.

All eyes on this year P6 especially that 2 “I” classes, Innovation and Initiative. They have the best teachers for all subjects and the reasons are obvious!

From now on, it will be subject based banding, no more top classes.

There will be another round of fund raising for school upgrading. TOP is slightly delayed to Mar 19 so we are unlikely to move back in beginning of next year. DD1 is excited to take PSLE in the upgraded school.

Thanks for the sharing . Not trying to sound otherwise, but if kid has interest/flair/aptitude for HCL then go ahead if the other subjects can be managed.

Can share how do you know/who are the better teachers?

The P briefly mentioned about additional enhancements to the initial upgrading proposal, so would be happy to help with the additional funding request.

SInce there will not be any top class, wondering if the classmates would stay in the same class throughout the years but shift around based on the subject banding during lesson time. . A bit like tertiary education style where the class comes together for other non-graded subjects.

i was at the pri3-4 talk and hence, not much elaboration on HCL.but this round at least he didn’t discourage opt in of HCL. He briefly mentioned that all subj must b above 75

To qualify for HCL in p5. He also did emphasize that with the sch rich Chinese history, they encourage kids to learn the language but gotta balance w core subjects.

Hopefully by banding kids on subject, they need not have to move around classes. They did not share how it is going to operationalize.
