Original Title: Piano Teacher Charges For Home Lesson
Hi. Can I asked what is the charges for those piano teacher who come to our house to teach? My son is finishing his Yamaha Junior Course soon (4 years). I’m thinking of switching him to Individual Classical Piano where there is ABRSM exam and the progress should be faster. The fees seem to varies a lot - $140 to $180 for a grade 1 student. Is this normal? -
It depends alot on the experience of the teacher & what you are expecting too.
I know of a young teacher who charges $100/4 lessons of 1.5hour each for grade 1/2. She’s new in the industry so she only has a few grade 1/2 students who have taken exams, not sure of her ability to produce results.
& also know of another very experienced teacher (proven results) who charges $40/hr for grade 1/2 & you must go to her house, she does not travel to students’ home due to her packed schedule.
If I’m sending my son for something skills based like piano, I’ll definitely want to fork out slightly more to get an experienced teacher with proven results of students passing or getting distinctions. If the foundation (basic fingering techniques) is not laid well, it’s hard for them to progress to higher level in future. It’s hard to ‘unlearn’ any bad habits already ‘learnt’.
If you are just looking for a teacher for fun lessons, then the less experienced teachers would be alright if they fit your budget.
Most importantly, you must get a piano teacher who is highly recommended by your friends/relatives. -
I agree with mrswongtuition that price depends on the experience.
My dd’s teacher charges now (my daughter not even in grade 1) - $140/month (45 mins lesson). We go to her place once a week for lesson.
She is very strict with her not only on the melody she plays, her fingering, the accuracy and her posture. She emphasizes on the foundation which we think is very important for long term.
She spends quite some time with my gal on theory as well making sure she understands before moving to the next stage.
In fact, after sending my dd to her, I feel the difference between this current teacher and my dd’s previous music school. She benefited more from this one to one teaching rather than a group’s lesson.
The progress is not so fast but we are ok with it as long as my gal enjoys the lesson and we can afford . -
Thanks for all the information. This is great.
What about missed lesson? If we have some gatherings and cannot have lesson at home, will there be make-up lessons? Is there lesson during school holiday or public holiday? What does the teacher do during lesson? -
My dd’s tr charges $150 for Gr 2 and $170 for Gr 3. Both 4x/month and 45 mins each time. She comes to my place, holds a degree and replaces any day/time she/us cannot make it or public holiday. Most importantly, the tr must have ‘chemistry’ to motivate and interest the child.

For my gal's teacher, it depends on the below scenario :Thanks for all the information. This is great.
What about missed lesson? If we have some gatherings and cannot have lesson at home, will there be make-up lessons? Is there lesson during school holiday or public holiday? What does the teacher do during lesson?
1. If the teacher is the one postphoning the class, she will make up on the same week on a date suitable for us.
2. If child is sick, we have to call her and she will try to fit in another time slot for her on another day.
3. If falls on public holiday, no lesson and no make up.
4. Her rates are monthly and she does not charge extra even if there's 5 weeks in that month.
5. She holds a Master in Piano. -

For my case, I pay her every 4 lesson.
She will have a communication booklet to record down what she has gone through for that lesson. -
My dd’s school charges $150 for 45 minutes individual lesson grade 1. Run on school calendar with term breaks so only 45 lessons a year. We need to pay for whole month even though sometimes only 3 lessons that month. Effectively work out to be exactly $40 each lesson 45 minutes
Seems more expensive compared to private piano teachers coming to your house? Furthermore, we have to go to the school premise
However, we haven’t bought a piano, only have keyboard at home. Not sure about my dd’s commitment yet. I suppose we need to buy a piano first before engaging private piano teacher…
