I do agree with some points concern2 has brought up. The bloggers(not all) have a thankless job of keeping the PAP on its toes. MIW know that with the evolvement of these social platforms, not many things can be kept under wraps and away from the public's eyes. These keyboard warriors are also heroes in their own rights. Of course , we must be discerning when reading their comments as some really do have the intention of stoking anti-govt sentiments.

I'm actually quite amazed at these bloggers , doing something not economically rewarding and probably risky , but they continued to stick to their guns. JMO
I can't see why their jobs are more thankless than that of our leaders. I'd be a couch potato all day criticizing policies I don't understand, spending people's money I don't have, demanding policies I have no accountability for.....and get lots of Facebook likes. What's not to like? If they were wrong they'd just slink off into the dark of cyberspace. They'd have more credibility if they were balanced. Their attack dog approach contrasts poorly with the more friendly approach the PAP is taking these days. In fact, sites like TOC and bloggers like AA are the reason why I'd be solidly behind the PAP the next election.

They have no clue that their unremitting attacks turn off plenty of reasonable people. Supposedly for the people but actually against plenty of citizens, irony.

I agree PAP has taken on a softer approach these days compared to their predecessors... But errm... I remember how they took a dig at YSL's EMA like they'll never go wrong with their people. So I guess they have to tread more carefully this time.

But aiya I'm just looking at this from an objective pt of view, not totally supporting any party. Who has my vote next time,I will play by ear coz many things may develop and unfold over the next few years. 😄

Thanks for the link, will read it.

Just to add... I feel PAP has been listening a lot to our voices nowadays, but prob a little too much even wrt certain policies like foreign workers supply...

I can think of about a million rea$ons why. 😉

Yeah, I am still flogging that 'it all started going downhill with ministerial salaries' horse. If they want thanks, take a bigger paycut. Who knows? If political office becomes 'national service' again, the PAP may actually find it easier to attract talent from the private sector again. And if one wants to understand why certain community work is no longer considered 'national service', just take a look at http://www.kiasuparents.com/kiasu/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=420.

Would YOU do their jobs for the salaries they are getting? Not that I'd ever get asked, but not in a million years, at triple their current pay. There are plenty of cut rate governments out there, cheap government not hard to find, good ones, on the other hand.....

I say again, thankless. Shanmugam doesn't need to be law minister, Singapore better served if the best legal minds stay in private sector?

I have long said that this whole p-school priority system is 'corrupt'. Not in the sense of malfeasance, but that the odds are stacked unfairly.

Today. WP's Sylvia Lim questions PAP's Teo Ho Pin on being accountable to voters

                http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/singaporelocalnews/view/1246158/1/.html

SINGAPORE: Chairman of Aljunied-Hougang Town Council (AHTC) Sylvia Lim has responded to the recent statement by Dr Teo Ho Pin - on the sale of the software formerly owned by the town councils managed by the People's Action Party (PAP) to Action Information Management Pte Ltd (AIM) in 2011, prior to the General Election.

She said AHTC is not able to verify the accuracy of the reasons for the sale cited in the statement on January 2 by Dr Teo, who is the coordinating chairman of PAP town councils.

Ms Lim said the documents AHTC has on hand, including the tender documents, do not disclose many of the details mentioned.

She also said the reasons given underscore three fundamental facts.

First, the PAP-managed town councils sold off the computer and financial systems developed with public monies to a vehicle of the PAP, just prior to the General Election.

Second, according to the most recent statement of AIM Chairman, Mr S Chandra Das, AIM \"as a PAP company\" wanted to \"be helpful to the PAP Town Councils\".

Third, the PAP sees no issue with an arrangement allowing them to terminate the software agreements with any town council with one month's notice, if there's a material change in the town council's membership.

Ms Lim also questioned the one-month termination clause in the AIM contract, which Dr Teo considered \"reasonable\".

She said he himself indicated that it would take \"maybe 18 to 24 months, or even longer\" to assess new software and develop a replacement system.

Ms Lim said the question of how the PAP-managed town councils acted in the public and residents' interest in relinquishing their ownership of the systems to AIM has still not been answered.

\"We leave it to the public to make their own judgement,\" she said
AHTC COMMITTED TO SAFEGUARDING RESIDENTS’ INTERESTS DESPITE CHALLENGES THROWN AT IT

I refer to the statement issued by Dr Teo Ho Pin on 2 Jan 2013 on the sale of the developed software formerly owned by the PAP-managed Town Councils to Action Information Management Pte Ltd (AIM) in 2011 prior to the General Election.

Aljunied-Hougang Town Council (AHTC) is not able to verify the accuracy of the reasons for the sale cited by Dr Teo, as the documents AHTC has on hand, including the tender documents, do not disclose many of the details mentioned. In any event, the reasons given underscore three fundamental facts: first, that the PAP-managed Town Councils sold off the computer and financial systems developed with public monies to a vehicle of the PAP, just prior to the General Election; second, according to the most recent statement of Mr Chandra Das, AIM’s Chairman, AIM “as a PAP company” wanted to “be helpful to the PAP Town Councils”, and; third, that the PAP sees no issue with an arrangement allowing them to terminate the software agreements with any Town Council with one month’s notice if there is a material change in the Town Council’s membership.

With regards to the one-month termination clause in the AIM contract, Dr Teo considered it “reasonable”. However, he himself indicated that it would take “maybe 18 to 24 months, or even longer” to assess new software and develop a replacement system. In our view, therefore, the question of how the PAP-managed Town Councils acted in the public (and residents’) interest in relinquishing their ownership of the systems to AIM upon such conditions has still not been answered. We leave it to the public to make their own judgment.

To allay any doubts about whether AIM had indeed terminated the software agreement with AHTC, a copy of the termination notice is attached for public scrutiny.

In spite of the challenges encountered by the new Workers’ Party-run AHTC during the handover from the PAP, we are grateful to all who have helped us and for the efforts put in by our staff and contractors to ensure a smooth taking over of Town Council administration, including to upscale and develop a computing and financial system for AHTC under very challenging circumstances. This ensured that the interests of Aljunied and Hougang residents were protected, including in such important areas as cleanliness, maintenance and lift breakdown rates. AHTC will continue to strive for higher standards in our service to residents.

                  SYLVIA LIM
                  CHAIRMAN
                  ALJUNIED-HOUGANG TOWN COUNCIL

I would do their job for 10% of what they are getting. And unlike the new bloods they are getting, I would not be getting a pay raise. Not that they will ever ask me, because I am not the kind of people they are looking for. I am not kuai kuai enough. 😉

Besides not kuai kuai, you really think you are up to it? You can imagine yourself interacting meaningfully with other world leaders at various summits? You can convince business leaders and investors to invest in Singapore? You can fly our flag high? Bet you don't know shanmugam's current pay is less than the income tax he paid before he became minister.

TAN KIN LIAN'S OPINION ON ALEX AU VS LEE HSIEN LOONG
Alex Au had made a statement somewhat along the following lines, \"if the the Attorney General Chambers and the Corrupt Practice Investigation Bureau are independent bodies, they should mount an investigation into the sale of the town council software to a company owned by a political party\". Some people said that this statement could be regarded as defamatory.

I do not understand why this should be the case; I consider it to be a fair statement.

I had met two Swedish public figures and told them about the background to this matter, shortly after they had read the news in the social media about the threat of legal action against Alex Au. Their first reaction was, \"This transaction would be considered in our country to be corruption\". I did not ask them to explain why this was the case; anyway, they are just expressing their opinion.

I have made several statements in the past that it is the duty of the Monetary Authority of Singapore and the Criminal Affairs Department to deal with the fraudulent investment schemes, rather than allow these schemes to be continued for years.

I considered that I was making a fair statement; although some \"tricky\" lawyer would write to me stating that I was alleging that these organisations were corrupt, or were neglecting their duty; and in so stating, I had damaged their reputation.

Fifteen years ago, in the course of my company's business, we received this type of \"tricky\" letter from a lawyer. It took a matter out of context (I forget the details of the matter) and twisted it to make several absurd interpretations followed by the usual bullying demands. We replied to deny all of these absurdities and followed up with a complaint to the Law Society against the unprofessional conduct of the lawyer. The Law Society did not pursue the matter; but the lawyer also dropped his demand. We did not really have the time to waste on these trivialities.

*Tan Kin Lian is a Singaporean businessman and social activist, and former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of NTUC Income. He was a former presidential candidate of Singapore
