But it calls into question the whole ETHOS of how the MIW embed themselves in the governing of Singapore.

Town Council is one thing. How about People's Association? How about PAP Community Foundation?

It's like the People's Liberation Army in China. It technically reports to the Communist Party, not the state.

This state of mind and being is much much harder to reconcile in the new world, which is why they have taken so long, which so much scrutiny, before something is being done.

Not sure how this will go honestly. The PAP, IMO, is not stalling for the sake of stalling. It's a matter of their entire ethos of being enveloped in the running of the country, and I think they are still trying to work that out.

Interesting indeed, the way you've put it.

They are very uncomfortable with accusations of conflicts-of-interest, which there are, in many many aspects of public life. Their defence, over the years, has been a stout defence that it's not so much processes and institutions that protect against abuse of conflicts-of-interests, but rather, having the right people in place NOT to abuse it.

Hence my prior example of Mdm Ho Ching. We are (well, some are) comfortable with her appointment, but why?

It is also the reason why I refuse to be hard on the MIW in this instance.

People take it at face value that they are trying to obfuscate the AIM issue. It's not so much that, IMO, than trying to stay true to a political philosophy that is at odds with the current environment.[/quote]
Am just chuckling to myself now that this is being slung around in parliament.

      http://www.theonlinecitizen.com/2013/05/the-parliament-is-not-a-place-to-settle-old-political-scores-by-calling-a-truce/

Form the very beginning I was pretty sure that WP didn't have a real axe to grind with the PAP on this issue, but only that they had to make a public 'stand' when it surfaced in the public blogosphere.

Are such perceived 'conflicts-of-interest' acceptable to the general public these days? Probably not.

But it was how these things were in the past, it's not as if there was any financial malfeasance. TCs are political beasts, that should change, but not sure why people should be so surprised or kick up a fuss about how they are, when it is plain and obvious.

Guess it's just blatant disappointment on the realization that

        \"Whiter than white\" is \"not so white\" after all......

I have great difficulty accepting that TCs should be trying to generate returns via high-risk investments. They ought not to be in that game at all.

It is like romance - after some time, you get less romantic, less emo, and more realistic 😂

Not trying to side WP, but based on the time period when HG had to find a contractor to do Town Council work, who would dare to have anything to do with THE OPPOSITIONS? There would have been so many questions of ‘what if’…correct me if I am wrong.

I can't see that in this current environment, that anyone can be fearful of working for or being associated with the opposition parties. In fact, try being a PAP supporter these days.......juz kena hammered.

Actually hor, TCs in Singapore are little municipal animals concocted to divert voters' attention away from important national issues. :imanangel:

So nowadays, a Member of Parliament is just a glorified MCST chairman and seats in Parliament can be won or lost over how many child care centres there are in a particular constituency or how often the corridors are swept or when residents can get new lifts. :please:

In the bad old days when TCs were really political beasts, we had municipal elections. Just imagine that. How horrifying! Who in the world holds local/municipal/town council elections?!
