All About Life Without Maids

Coolkidsrock2:
Would like advice/tips on keeping the kitchen clean. This is one of the key consideration I am keeping the maid. Currently my maid will clean up the kitchen daily after cooking - cleaning kitchen cabinets, door and floor. She will take everything out to wash and clean out the interiors of the cabinets as well as scrub floor and walls. I find that part-time maids cannot clean as well in this respect though I have a session dedicated for the kitchen.
If she's so good then just keep her? -

Presumably the highlighted parts are not done daily? My method of keeping the kitchen clean is not to cook anything too oily. I never deep fry and use lids on pots and pans when I cook. I wipe around the stove after cooking, and only do cabinets (exterior) and floors weekly. -
The highlighted parts are done weekly over 2 days on weekends as it is quite intensive - one day for the top cabinets and another for the bottom ones. Rest of the cleaning is on a daily basis.
I also do not do deep frying and even stir-fried is avoided, where possible.
Kids are old enough to take care of themselves so apart from general housekeeping, which I can do, my only concern with doing away with the maid is the cleaning of the kitchen.
Would like to have my privacy back after all these years of a stranger living in my house. -

I don't want to tell you how my kitchen is cleaned as you would be horrified! Maybe you should consider lowering your expectations a bit?The highlighted parts are done weekly over 2 days on weekends as it is quite intensive - one day for the top cabinets and another for the bottom ones. Nothing is silly to ask... We all wen thru tats y we r all sharing..longmao.irene, ur reply is very encouraging. Thank u
Jus one silly question, I'm normally leave to drop my child at childcare and then to work about 7.15am and be back about 7pm. Is it safe to leave the slowcooker on for that long period of time? will the soup be dry by then?
Slow cooker soup wldnt dry out.. Bt ingrediant will \"melted\" hee if u understd wat i mean..
U can put it on auto mode so as to slow down d process of \"meat disintregrading\" into d soup. Otherwise can as sm of d mummies suggested use a thermal pot ( bt tat needs to b boil @least 30mins to a hr) bt i guess u can put it in d stove 1st, n carry on ur washing/ dressing up, getting ur chd ready n lastly put it in d thermal before stepping out d hse.. Can save electricial bills smore!!! Any way being maidless oredi a BIG BIG saving!
Just my 2cents..
Btw wen i hv my no.2... Maidless, i did confidment catering, n was so happy wifout d hassle of hving a maid, full full rest.. till DS came hm fr chdcare.. Till tis v day, DS p1 n DD 3YO,maidless, no doubt abit biz as i am a cleaninless freak ( mop daily) n my Emperor hardly @ hm to help out am so happy , most impt save all d $$( fr PUB bills tat d maid will busted) for my kiddos enrichment! So jia you! U can do it!! -

Am not sure why but there are cockroaches in the cabinets if not cleaned in this manner. Even when I was catering food, I still find them. I cannot understand.
Am learning to manage my expectations too but it is a long process. Used to clean till midnight when I come home from work cos too mentally disturbed by the greasiness from the re-heating up of the catered food. Training kids to eat salads while we still have the maid. -

2) Cockroaches- go supermart and buy a box of cockroach traps eg Combat. I put one in a kitchen cabinet, and 1 in the master bathroom. -
I put one outside my main door, one master bathroom, one common bathroom, one maid’s room (this is a must put place) and one in the rubbish drop.
Did not put inside the cabinets. Put pandan leaves instead as was told cockroaches find it pungent.
Will try to steam it instead. We are sensitive to microwave food. -
Just wondering how to repel lizards from coming into the house … naturally, that is using some herbs or household materials that are non-toxic.
I reckon what is toxic to pests will be toxic to humans too.
