      vinegar:
i am extremely disappointed & feel helpless with my P3 boy.

He is extremely stubborn n bad learning attitude. We spent whole wkend to revise chinese n english compo with him.At the end, he told me he didn't follow the tactics n didn't use any phrases which we n tutors taught him. Instead,he used some other words which we didn't teach him. For e.g. he used \"declared\" to replace \"said\"....yet,he doesn't even know what does it mean.

even in maths, he refused to follow the shorter methods we teach him, or using any modeling. I've scolded, beaten, punished, soft talked....none of this works.

Now,i've stopped teaching.Let him fail his oral since he will not follow what will be taught.
Can understand your frustration. But he is still young, be patient with him. Give him time and space to digest what he has learnt. I know it is easier said than done. We all have such \"why are you like this? :frustrated: ๐Ÿ˜ข\" moments.

You can leave the teaching to his teachers and tutor or you can continue teaching him when you are less frustrated. Whatever it is, don't give up on him, your support is important to him.

        vinegar:
how to help him to internalise?

I'm no expert. Not sure how much I share here will make sense or be useful to you.

There are times when I teach dd1, P2, she will not get it and I don't understand why. I will try many ways to reach out to her but no use. After a few days or a few wks or even longer, she gets it. I don't know how but she does. So I guess she needs the time to figure it out or internalise it. Another example ds' tingxie, K2, no matter how I try he doesn't get it, the next morning I asked him again without letting him see the words again, he's able to write it out for me. I guess he needs the time for his brain to work on them.

Some other times it's me who needs some time to think how to reach out to dd1 to help her understand. Dd1 thinks in a very weird way I discovered after working with her for some time. So I need to explain in the way that she can understand. It's not that she has learning difficulties. It's just that her way of thinking is strange.

For your ds, I find it interesting that he used declared instead of said. I feel said is easier to write than declared.

I don't know what to suggest to help your ds be more comfortable with the tactics and vocab that you want him to learn.

For my dd1, when we first starting spelling, she was rather bad at it. So I approached it with printing the words in different colours, colour by syllabus, and I used lower case scrabble like tiles. I have a few steps using the printed words and tiles to help her to learn. It was interesting and fun for her. Gradually, she didn't need those and is able to learn it her way, which I don't interfere.

Since your ds still feel he's not comfortable with the phrases and tactics after you revised with him, try to think of a way to enable him to be at ease with the ideas. Usually when I'm stuck, I will use games and other hands-on activities to help them understand. Try other ways which is not just pen and paper.

Not knowing much abt your ds, I can only share what I do with my kids. I think even at P3, can still engage in fun activities to learn.

        All the best

:thankyou: For compo, i cut n pasted all the words/sentences which he has learnt thru tuition or tingxie.Times running out,so I taught him the words/phrases which he has learnt b4 than introducing new ones for him.Yet,he chose declared. He told me \"Said\"=\"declared\",he saw this word from creative writing book.

What's most amusing,he used the word:\"listen at side of ear\".I asked him where he learnt this sentence. He said he converted Chinese idioms(่€ณ่พน้ฃŽ) to English idioms.I asked him,why can't u used \"turn into deaf ears\" which i taught u b4?? He said,\"must be creative\" He said sometx u told me i could convert the words from chinese to english.I said, yes, but not all words.

You are not alone. Mine is already in P5 and fyi, is a DD. :slapshead: Somehow and sometimes, i think is genetic. Thinking back, i was like that. My nephew is also another classic example. However, my sister adopts a \"care-less\" attitude. Though my nephew did not fare too well in his primary, he has managed to enter into a good school via sports. Now serving army and awaiting to enter medicine faulty in 2 years' time. The only thing i can keep reminding myself is, hang on... :imanangel: :imanangel:

Itโ€™s normal that kids are unable to use the new words immediately.

                For the new words,

                1. Teach the meaning (It is more effective if you give examples of how and when the word can be used). Teaching the meaning alone isnโ€™t effective for a child.

                2. Mix all the new words and their meanings together. Ask your child to match them.

                3. Select relevant sentences from the dictionary/guide book. The sentence must include the new words. Remove the new words and ask your child to fill in the blanks.

                4. Role reversal (ask your child to explain the word to you)

                Hope it helps!

I agree with the above pointers. Also, as far as you can, use the new words and phrases in normal speech and daily life. The child will remember them a lot better that way. Another thing I did with my kids was to encourage them to use a more varied vocab in daily life - at various times, I banned the words 'nice' and 'fine' because they were so overused. I have also banned the overuse of 'good' and 'bad' for some periods.

Were the words used totally inappropriate and was the compo written totally out of context? With my DD I have the opposite problem. She will at times get fixated with certain words or phrases and will try by all means to use them, even if they do not properly convey what she wants to say. If overall, the compo is grammatically correct, not out of point, and has a good flow, using interesting phrases and better vocab and phrases can be incorporated slowly.

As for Math, again, take a step back. Is the method he is using accepted by the school? At the end of the day, does it allow him to show his workings correctly and does he have a good grasp of the concepts tested? If he does, why insist on him using a particular method if he is more confident with what he is using now?

I think he's trying and I view it as more of work in progress.

If you cut and paste, he might not get the context. I'm not sure how much you cut so I'm guessing here. He might need a bit more context to understand how the phrases can be used.

He's not exactly wrong is explaining that said = declared, for him he probably just view the word as alternative to use when writing direct speech or to indicate a character is speaking. You can take this opportunity to explain the differences and how the tone of speech would be like. When we are reading, and there are direct speech parts, I will ask dd1 to act how it should be spoken? This is to let her get the idea that words such as ask, said, questioned, shouted, screamed, muttered have different tones and uses.

I know the above cannot be used when time is short and stress level is high. But maybe will give you some ideas or help you to think of your own, now that the test is over and stress level is reduced.

As for noisy class environment, it's not easy to tune out the noises and concentrate at what the tr is trying to teach. If class management is weak, he will need external help.

i included the examples for the phrases. Both the tutor n me went thru the phrases with him.

Perhaps he nid more practise. He dislikes writing english compo. It was a struggle to get him to start writing.Even he is willing,he wanna see the \"answer\" for compo 1st.

He is ok with chinese compo writing, coz he attends the chinese writing tuition.
