      Jennifer:

Agree electric steamer is more convenient to use. U considering a thermal pot or a microwave oven? U could make soup in a thermal pot at night, then bring over in the morning to heat up before serving. Might save u some time in the morning when preparing lunch items.

I have a slow cooker. Do you think I should get a thermal pot too?

Advantages of thermal pot over slow cooker\"
1)Save electricity (Only need to boil over fire for abt 20min)
2)No danger of over cooking (If you forget to turn off the slow cooker, or set to too high, the danger of overcooking is still there).
3)Portable. If you buy the small thermal pot (for 1 pax), can just dump the the ingredients and boil in the morning, then bring the whole thermal pot to the hospital for your MIL, it will cook while you are bringing it there. I find this is fresher, rather than cook the soup in the slow cooker the night before and then bring to her. That's how I brought soup for my FIL when he was sick previously.

I think the electric steamer is very small if you use round plates, unless you purposely buy the oval plates that can fit in. 1-2 pax still ok. Advantage is that it heats up the steam a lot faster than then over the stove. So total time is faster. But for bigger families, I find it not very useful. I got one from DH's company family day lucky draw, but it's still sitting in my store room cos that one is really too small.

Thanks. I will consider the thermal pot too.

I have seen a round stainless steel electric steamer (quite big) being sold at Giant Tampines sometime back. Not sure what brand (Akira perhaps? :scratchhead: ) or what price because I already have an electric steamer at home.

I have both. But I hardly use my thermal pot now as some how I don't find food as nice tasting as cooked by slow cooker. That's just my preference. I know many swear by their thermal pots! šŸ˜„

yes,agree....i still prefer the food cooked by slow cooker or double boiler.

My thermal pots = white elephant.

Am thinking of getting a steam oven to replace my microwave oven which can also grill and bake. Would like feedback/comments on the following models which I am considering:

                http://www.miele.com.sg/sg/domestic/products/1177_DG_1450_ED-38649.htm
                http://www.appliancist.com/steam_ovens/sharp-healsio-steamer-the-healthy-oven.html
                http://www.smeg.sg/product/sc45m2/

Please let me know if you think that there is a better alternative.

                Thank you.

I would like to invest in a steamer. I have been using the conventional method of steaming n my food is either overcooked or undercooked. So its high time for me to change.

Can anyone recommend a good brand n give feedback on your steamer? I heard that steamers come with timers.

                  Pls share.

                  Thanks.

I am concern on the electricity bill šŸ˜ž

It is better to be overcooked esp for meat than undercooked.

Steaming by the conventional method requires paying attention to a few details:

quantity of water in steamer - enough to generate sufficient steam?
use a shallow metal plate - greater surface area ensures even doneness
use a digital clock - timing can be down to the exact seconds
ensure the food to be steamed is at room temperature - easier to control the duration to be steamed

generally speaking, a 600g of whole fish requires 7 to 8 mins. If the whole fish has 2 or 3 cuts across, then 6 mins

A medium fish fillet ard 6 mins

A small fish fillet ard 5 mins

A small metal plate of pork ard 4 mins

Steam eggs at low heat ard 5 mins

Steaming requires one to gauge and adjust for the next steaming, once you get the hang of it, overcooked or undercooked episodes will be greatly minimised.

Just got an EuropAce steamer from a lucky draw. Thought it might be useful coz we steam a lot. But the containers are plastic. Anyone has any experience with this brand of steamer?
