Victoria School

Thanks Victorian,
Just to clarify, don't all sec 1 and 2 study D&T? They are required to buy the apron so I presume that they do. In fact, as long as the teachers can prove good notes and quality teaching it may be better without textbooks so that their learning is not confined. I have seen ACS primary using Reader's Digest and am very impressed by the comprehensions given. :thankyou: -

Yup, they do. However, if they choose to take AEP (which I did), then they do not have to study D&T and Home Econs. I think Reader's Digest is a component of their resources and they have other resources as well. No problem! Thanks Victorian,

I am in the same situation as easymama . My son has placed his ist choice in Anglican High and therefore got in ( btw, hs scored 247 and AHS cutoff is 240 this yr) .We have wanted him to go into VS and therefore appealed for him pending outcome .( we placed VS as 2nd choice ) Need your opinion here : Which is a better choice : AHS or VS ? My son dislike boys school but we think VS is a good school . He is still very strong headed and think AHS is a good choice and many of his classmates are there .Till now, we have not got him and textbook or uniform hoping his appeal is sucessfully and he will change his mind .

Both AHS and VS are good schools.
Your son may have his reasons for wanting to go to AHS, maybe he likes the culture there, or his friends are all going there.
Also, youngsters tend to prefer co-ed schools over single sexed schools.
IMHO, you should let your son choose after laying out all the pros and cons.
I always belief that, as parents, we are there to guide our kids.
They may not follow our wishes, but our wishes may not necessarily be the best. -
Hi Victorians , ur comments has indeed helped me alot in the choice, at least give us some idea of the culture there . Actually there is no special reasons why my son want to be in Anglican ? Is just that the school cutoff is closest to his score and it is a mixed school . Besides , there are some of his classmates there but they are not his close friends .
Moreover , he is not given higher chinese to read so I don’t see the point of him getting into a SAP school ( AHS is a SAP school) . Btw , are there any parents in this forum also appealing for VS pending for results . Just wonder what is the chances like ? I understand their orientation is on 30-Dec and we will only know the appeal result by then .So say that the successful students will miss the orientations ? -
I have a few friends from VS and my cousin and friends are from AHS. Frankly speaking, I am more impressed by graduates from VS. They are academically more inclined (i.e. they inculcate a love to study) as compared to AHS’s students. Personally, I also see better value system inculcated in their students. For example, I see none of my friends from VS asking their parents to fund them buying a car for their own use. They are humble and use within their own means. On the contrary, I have the impression from my cousins that it is common for their parents to buy them luxurious items (like car) even before they started working.

Thanks for responsing . I am quite surprise to hear that as I tot AHS is a Chinese based school and should be inculcated with many chinese values like to remember their roots etc …anyway your mentioned incident could be the minority. Actually my mind is set for him to go into Victoria but just worry for the appeal results .Anyone here has such appeal experience before to share ?

Actually, there is no such thing as "chinese values", "remember your root" etc…You see RI is an English school but they have a strong alumni association that contributes back to the school too…same with VS. And many of the western universities like Harvard, Yale etc… have successful alumni contributing back to the school too. So I really don’t understand how good values have to be labeled "chinese". There is probably a biased thinking in many people mind subconscioulsly.

I think it also depends on the students and their upbringing. My niece was from AHS and she is very responsible and a great help to her parents. She was brought up with a silver spoon until her father's business failed. She gives tuition part-time while doing her degree. She takes things in her strife and look forward to graduating and starting work next year to ease her family's burden. :ugogirl:
During her stint in AHS, it was one of the top choice school but I have heard recently that standard has dropped or something.
