You mentioned 220, I assumed you are referring to MGS (Sec) at Blackmore Drive (or was it road ?)Just curious.
For affiliated schools, do they go by points or %?
Eg, for 'by point', anyone from affiliated schools who has higher than 220 will be admitted. The remaining seats will be opened to those from outsider who applied.
'by %', the school 'reserves', say, 50% of seats for their affiliated schools (assume based on past records the points will fall within 210~230). The rest free-for-all!
Any idea?
For MGS (Sec), they only have Express Stream, so those who not qualify to go to Express (say 188 is the cut-off for Express), they will not be accepted to MGS. Meaning to say, you can go to MGS (Sec) from MGS (Pri) only if you score 188 and above.
So, why is the affiliated COP score of MGS is 220. This is because MGS also wants to maintain a certain standard in their Secondary Schools, so they set 220 as a qualifying mark for their affiliated student from MGS (Pri) for automatic qualification.
So, those extra places will also be offered to non-affiliated students. Otherwise, the COP for non-affiliated students at MGS (Sec) would be much higher then the current 253.
MGS (Sec) is definitely a good school as well as a popular choice.
Good luck ... -

Previous years the lowest is always around 87, but this year the lowest is 45, so I can only assume that there are students who gets 46, 48 53, 67, 82 etc. If it is just an outlier then it should be knock off to prevent a misunderstanding. I agree the mean and std deviation can be a useful guide to help parents in this kind of \"unusual\" situation.Of course, your calculation is based on assumption of simple averages.
We can have a clearer picture if MOE release the mean & standard deviation of all subjects for every year.
Any idea why MOE does not want to release this info ?
Any idea why should simple info like mean & standard deviation be confidential ? -

Yeah, we only know the spread, in 2009 is from 45 to 290 whereas in 2008 is from 87 to 287.
But in between, we are in the dark.
Shouldn't MOE release the info on mean & std deviation ? I see no harm in releasing the figure ... -
