Based on my observations, my guess is that the HAST probably was the 1st level of screening. I would imagine they won't even bother looking at your portfolio unless you are within the top 20% for HAST. Thus, being an all-rounder probably was the least important factor.

In terms of sports DSA, it is defintely more multi-faceted than just being the best.

I think for Academic DSA, HAST is most important. But for Sports DSA, a lot more leeway is given. There was a case of a boy who applied under Sports DSA for ACSI a few years ago. Academically he was weak. He scored 200+ but was given a place in the IP programme which surprised a lot of the parents who were in the same DSA Sport as the boy. Eventually he proved that he couldn't cope in the IP programme and was switched out to the O level class in Sec 3.

Maybe the Sch Knows it has a Back-up of O Level Class, that's Why giving the boy a Chance to Try for IP.

But for those Sch that has IP Prog only, Maybe they Have to Exercise more Stringent Criteria on the academic capability, else the kids may suffer later on if they have to Switch out from the Sch in the event that they cannot Cope ....
Yes, but the school deprived another student of a place in the IP programme. That's why the parents in that boy's sport weren't happy.
My DS had waited three hours for his NJC interview yesterday but he only went in for ten minutes too!

Wow ! Which panel was he in and at what time ?
My DS also went in for 10+ minutes only but hardly need to wait.
His time was supposed to be 3.30pm and he went in around 3.40pm

My DS too had to wait for over an hour. But he said interview was about 10 min. Not sure what time he went in and what time he came out. He was taken away by the senior student about 15 mins before his interview. But he said they had to wait outside for a long time.
From what I heard from DS, the questions were mainly to assess your personality. DS mostly answered from heart and did not give any calculated well thought out answers. Not sure if it is a good thing or a bad thing. 🤷
DS also said that the boy who was interviewed before him came out quite tearful. Said his whole face was red and he was wiping his face. DS was feeling very sorry for the boy. Wonder what went wrong?
Oh dear....poor boy...hope he'll recover from it soon.

DD's friend called DD last night after NJC interview and felt lousy about the interview. She was asked about her other DSA applications and DD's friend mentioned about RGS' s rejection. Immediately, one of the interviewers asked her what she thought was the reason for her rejection. Poor gal felt awkward but went on to elaboate about not being out-spoken enough. She was then told by the panel that in IP sch, she would need to be outspoken. DD's friend walked out with a totally bruised ego. 😢

My DD waited for 20 mins, scheduled at 230pm n went in at 250pm...not too bad...the interview took abt 15 mins. The panel consists of 3 interviewers whom she said were v friendly. The same teachers who access them during the day activity. Her classmate had a panel of 5 interviewers n one of them is the discipline master. I wonder if this grp is a better grp :?

Oh dear. I hope she picks herself up and it doesn't impact her mood for PSLE. I can imagine how down she must be feeling. Lots of TLC and encouragement needed from the parents now.

You are right. But ACSI also offers switch from O level to IP at the end of Sec 2 for top performers. So in the end there is a balance.

Just to explain why I said it deprived other boys of a place in IP: That year, a couple of the boys in that sport CCA were offered the O level route instead IP, despite having a better academic track record than the one who was given the IP track. In the end, these boys chose to go to a rival school. That's why I said it was depriving other boys of a chance in the IP track. I suppose the school felt the first boy could bring more glory to the school.

looks like the NJC people really had a totally different mentality, different approach and objective in their interview, based on anecdote sharings above

I counted they need to involve at least around 40 teaches with a panel of 3 teachers in a room to accommodate 208 candidates in 15 interview each.
If some rooms have 5, even more teachers are involved.
How accurate can the interview process be since there are so many different interviewers ?
More like an element of chance involved.

Do you think their approach is different this year than in the past?
