My son was interviewed by the team with the Discipline Mistress of NJC. For some answers, he was cut short in mid sentence and a new question was asked.

So we thought he was a real goner for the njc dsa, that was why i said the CO was unexpected.

I really don't know how much weightage the interviews hold.
There were so many different panels and interview time can range from 10 min to 45 min.

I remember some kids didn't answer \"PIER\" as HCI values during HCI interview. Wonder if they get CO from HCI. If they do get in, then we can roughly know how much the weightage the interviews hold. Anyone can comment on this?
& also those kids who couldn't ans HCI in mandarin??
I think the answer to your question is easy. For HCI and RI doesn't matter how well the GEP boys performed in the interview or the short written test or the GAT test. If the SA1 scored below 80%, there will be no CO. Maybe a WL from HCI if scored is very near to 80%, like 79.xx%.

Maybe to add on >80% also not 100% guarantee a CO.

Hi blur-dad, sorry to hear about your son's DSA experience. I'm sure your son will do well enough via his PSLE results to get into his dream school. Will he be taking up the ACSI WL? Or will he forgo it and try for RI/HCI at the S1 Central Posting exercise?

Hi jtoh

Thank you.

Not sure should we take up the WL offer from ACSI, still not decided yet. Ask DS not to think about it, just focus on PSLE first. Will talk about it after PSLE. However, it is not easy, most of his firends had already gotten CO or WL from their dream schools. Just a few marks different, most of them have already received one or two or even three CO/WL. I guess this is something that as parents have to manage the expectation right and properly. If not, it will do more harm than good.

Yes, maybe the bar will be raised next year. In order to be awarded a CO from RI or HCI, at least 85%.

I remember in 2009, when my DS was in P4, his senior in P6, scored 78% and awarded CO from RI.

Hi blur dad,

That's so true. It can be demoralizing or it can push the kid to excel at PSLE. We just have to manage expectations and be there to support them. Good luck for your ds' PSLE. 🙂

Does anyone know how many places available via NJC dsa? I know that 200 were selected for Activity Selection and interview.

Should be just over 100 DSA places? Balance will be reserved for S1 posting.
For P6 GEP, roughly how many percents of students have results > 80%? Thanks.

Not sure, but I have done some simple calculation . There are estimated about 320-330 x P6 GEP boys in year 2011.

1)\tAssume 90%++ have applied for RI. So Est. 300 GEP boys have applied to RI
2)\tRI has about 175 seat for GEP Students
3)\tTo my understanding there are few cases of GEP boys who scored low end of 80% were awarded WL for RI
4)\tSo I assume that there are more than 175 GEP boys scored more than 80% for their SA1
5)\tThere are total about 450 primary 6 GEP students in year 2011. Including those P6 GEP girls, I believe there are more than 50% of the total cohort scored more than 80% for SA1.

However, you might not agree with me.

My DS scored 77.x% for his SA1. Applied DSA to RI, HCI and ASCI. Got rejected from RI and HCI. WL for ACSI. The DSA journey was quite painful for my DS. Take sometime for him to get over it.

Well, I guess this is the price to pay for not scoring >80% and hoping to get DSA to the top boy’s school via DSA.

Cheers

Blurdad, sorry to hear abt this. This is my worry too... I really hope that my ds can score >80% next year, hoping he does not need to go thru such agony. But seems like those who get low 80% also can't be spared by such agony this year. Imagine there're 350 GEP boys in 2012 batch!
Wishing your ds all the best for his PSLE!
Just to add on.
The computation of the average is based on normal chinese and not higher chinese. So make sure your child do well in the normal chinese in P6.

I think for most GEP students, they are able to achieve > 80% in Maths and science. As to whether their overall >80% would then depend very strongly on their CHinese and English. GEP english is quite tough and not many can scored >80%. Hence my advice is to aim for 90% for maths; 85% for science. English around 75 and not too low for chinese too. If you score below 70% for chinese, it is very difficult to pull the overall up to 80%.

Same for PSLE, if you are aiming above 260, then your chinese cannot be too poor, must at least a high A.

In short, I think chinese plays an important part in determine their overall as the mark difference for the other 3 subjects are usually not that great.
JMHO. 🙂

Hi Blur Dad, sorry to hear about your RI/HCI rejection. However, it is still not too bad since there is at least WL from ASCI. Good luck to your ds PSLE too!

What about DHS ? Anyone know their cut-off for GEP ? Should it be also included for DSA if <80% ?
