Actually when MOE gives the 80% figure, they don't say which school the successful DSAs are for. Most kids and parents want to go to RI/HCI/NUSH etc, but of these 80% CO/WLs, some could be for the 2nd tier schools which the kids don't want to go to anyway but tried out for DSA just in case.

The DSA positions available in top IPs are more than sufficient to cater for all GEP kids. However, because a lot of kids tried a few IPs and get multiple COs/WLs, thus the said <20% are left with no COs/WLs πŸ˜“

My point is that the stats may show 80% success rate for DSA but it doesn't mean 80% success rate at the top schools. Success rate at your top tier schools may only be 50%, with the remaining 30% getting COs from 2nd tier schools they have no intention of going to. For these kids, it's as good as not getting a CO/WL, but statistically, they're counted as successful.

DSA is by merit, not by supply vs demand
Yep. So long as you meet their criteria, they will take you in. This is for GEP and probably academic domain. Different story for sports DSA.

Definitely. I have no GEP kid, juz thinking from angle of the <20% GEP kids.

ngbrdad:

Most GEP girls will get CO/WL.
So being the only all girls school here, it's natural for RGPS to have higher rate.
NYPS being the premier GEP school also should have higher rate lah.
Btw do they have a higher girl : boy ratio compared to other GEP schools ?
There are more boys than girls at NYPS but this is probably the case at the other GEP centres too?

Then they bluff children one leh.
One of the selling point to attract people into accepting the GEP offer was more than 80% will get secondary school of their choice thru DSA.

Never bluff lah, just that they never say girl girl 100% and boy much less %  overall 80% still correct πŸ˜‰
Anyway the GEP kids who didn't get any DSA offer or get into IP school after PSLE are usually boy boy right 🀷

You mean ALL GEP girls got/ will get COs thru DSA every year? Didn't know that!

So far those GEP girls whom I know yes. But above post is just teasing ngbrdad, hope everyone takes it with a pinch of salt :boogie: I am no GEP parent so I don't have actual stats. The GEP parents are the experts and may have more infor. These experts would know better and maybe can enlighten us. Haha πŸ˜‰ πŸ˜‰ I am just a humble mainstream mum trying to empathize the <20% GEP kids with no DSA CO/WL, nothing more nothing less 🀷

Didn't know that!
GEP is 1/3 girls and 2/3 boys ratio which will work out to be about 150-170 girls and 300-330 boys in an approx 450-500 cohort of GEPpers. Given this smaller cohort of GEPper girls, not surprising most get DSA offers as most schools will be \"competing\" to get them in.

On a similar note, with this smaller cohort of girls, mainstream \"top\" girls also have greater chance of DSA success compared with mainstream \"top\" boys. No doubt DSA is by merit, but schools will still have some target numbers they aim for. With fewer competition (esp. with the all girls schools), chances will definitely be higher. My analysis is purely from a number / statistic viewpoint, not meaning to offend anyone's viewpoint.
